Description
I did not realize I had this tape in my collection, I'm guessing it was my dad's, and played it through to write this description. Wow! It sounds fantastic. Recorded on Ampex tape using Ampex gear, probably straight off the A&M Master tapes (probably also recorded on Ampex tape, etc.) and it shows. This is a 7.5 ips tape, double sided, four track stereo.
Brass is notoriously hard to record, because of the numerous harmonics that give it that unique "brass" sound. Well, whatever the formula, Ampex had it DOWN. This album sounds amazing. Recording levels are not crazy, so there is no saturation or distortion and the highs are effortless and clear. At 7.5 ips, the noise floor is down far enough that the whole dynamic range comes through. Songs like "Love Potion #9" will make you think the band is at your house. "Whipped Cream" refers to the last track on side 1, but also to the whole album. It's filled with fluffy material that is not intended to be serious. It was a fun jaunt for Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and that spirit definitely comes through.
If you have only ever heard the LP, but can listen to this album on open reel tape, you really should. It is an entirely different experience. The xylophones and saxes just sing with a clarity I would not have expected. There is no compression or distortion. It is just mind boggling.
