Proving rather solidly that there are still some unknown monster psych singles that have yet to be comped – and on major labels to boot – here’s one of the wildest uncomped bad boys there is – Hieronymous and the Dharma Bums “900 Mice” b/w “Father Death” on the Parrot label from a year in the late 60’s that I’m sure none of the band members even remember. No doubt one listen to the sound byte below is all you’ll need to convince you just what an acid-laced beast this one is, but if for some reason it doesn’t work, here’s all you need to know. “900 Mice” starts out all mystical and moody, like some Pacific Northwest band covering the Strawberry Alarm Clock’s “Black Butter.” At the 1:30 mark, the entire song literally erupts into a sea of crackling mega-FUZZ, bathing the black grooves in a tidal wave of electric distortion, while the background vocalists wail and moan behind the din like the cast of 40 Days of Night singing along to Pink Floyd’s “Careful With That Axe, Eugene.” How every single compilation in the entire free world missed out on this amazing psychedelic freakout is, much like Perez Hilton’s TV show, one of the real mysteries of life. There’s only one bad thing you could say about it – at a scant 2:05, you wish there were more. It’s not so much an acid trip as it is an acid hop, skip and jump.
Fortunately, there’s more good head swirling action on the flip. Not quite as trippy, maybe, but “Forever Death,” with its gravel-throated snotty vocals, jangly guitar and theme of Death, does sound a lot like an outtake from the Kaleidoscope’s Side Trips album. For a B-side, it’s far better than it has to be. And if there is, by chance, more Hieronymous and the Dharma Bums material in the vaults, I’d love to hear it. One of the biggest surprises of last year for me.
