Are you looking for a Birthday Present for a Hi Fi nerd? Here's a bumper bundle of FOUR Test/Stereo Demonstration discs.
There's a nice clean copy of the legendary Hi Fi Sound stereo test and set-up disc from 1974, number HFS75. You will also get THREE extra test and set-up discs from 1958, 1959 and the mid 1960's.
Here's what you'll get: 1. Probably the most boring record ever made, it's the "Hi Fi Sound Magazine" stereo test and set-up disc from 1974, number HFS75.
You will be guided by various bleeps, whooshes and blank grooves as you set up your turntable and watch your family leave. It's in very nice condition (probably a VERY STRONG VG+++ or better in a good clean tidy sleeve.) Very collectable.
2. The famous 7" Decca "Double F Double S Stereo" Demonstration Record. It's a shortened version of the notorious "Journey Into Sound" 12" LP which drove your neighbours to distraction in the late 50's and early 60's. It has Geoffrey Sumner doing the narration, plus Vera Lynn, The London Symphony Orchestra, Ted Heath, Bob Sharples and some trains and tap-dancers thundering about. The number is STO 101 (STO was a short-lived prefix for the new-fangled stereo discs).
3. PYE Stereo Demonstration Disc PYE DEM 45 A/B. Remarkably, this rare 7" disc from 1959 has some music on it that is actually enjoyable. Ray Ellington and his Quartet perform two hilarious versions of nursery rhymes, Larry Adler toots his harmonica, Eric Delaney bashes the drums and there is a classical selection from the Halle Orchestra. The flimsy paper sleeve has seen better days (see photograph) but the disc inside is VG++ and plays very well.
4. Deutsche Grammophon "Test Record For Setting Up Stereo Equipment" 220 497 from the mid 60's. Saving the "best" till last, this remarkably useful set-up disc is narrated by the most boring man in the world. You can tell by his voice that he is wearing a tweed jacket with leather patches on the elbows. His strangulated voice is that of a man you'd hastily back away from if you were unfortunate enough to meet him at a garden party. However, it's a very useful disc. I have one of my own which I use when setting up stereo systems for the poor lost souls who are now rediscovering vinyl. Mr Boring welcomes "all record enthusiasts" and demonstrates setting up the two channels (using music, not bleeps!) and provides a simple but effective speaker phase check. Then, our excruciating new friend takes us through a few sound effects (a tram, a train and an aircraft) before wishing us "Many Happy Hours With Steer-eo" and leaving us with the Werner Muller Orchestra's version of "My Blue Heaven". This disc is in VG+ ish used but OK condition, it plays OK and comes in a Company Sleeve.
You'll get all FOUR discs, plus I might put a SURPRISE in the parcel for you! I won't say what it is, because then it wouldn't be a surprise. It will be nerdy.
