Label/Format: Liberty – Black format, it seems to be the concensus this was never pressed on the blue label. (Please see label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in fantastic condition: very clean, fresh and attractive examples with any of the tiny few spindle marks, fine and very faint. Hardly even played, this was an original purchased by a lady owner who apparently bought it because she liked the cover.

Cat Number: LBS 83294.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. A good average weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Quite rare, seldom seen and in high demand. Finding one so light played is even more difficult and with an attractive, little-worn cover, near impossible.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Within the field of UK progressive rock there can be few better kept secrets than the magificent High Tide. A band that made just two albums and both are astonishingly brilliant. A four piece heavy band that totally blew me away when I first heard them. A follow up to the awesome Sea Shanties – hardly Sea Shanties however, blistering electric guitar and violin with tons of wah-wah – both are early heavy prog nirvana. The four members were: Tony Hill - guitar, vocals, acoustic guitar, organ; Simon House - electric violin, organ piano; Peter Pavli - bass and Rog Hadden - drums, piano pipe organ. This quartet made truly inspired doom laden heavy prog like a few more well known acts around at the time. Hill has a Jim Morrison type voice which complements the sound of this band perfectly. Heavy guitars go head-to-head for supremacy with House’s electric violin with awesome results. A barrage of electric frenzy with heavy pounding rhythm, the excitement goes into overdrive. Latterly of Hawkwind, this was Simon House at his very best and this band should have gone on to superstardom within this field, but alas not the case – the world was not quite ready for this music style just yet. The cover is one of the most difficult to find in nice conditions ever. A near impossible rich black, soft card, textured sleeve that will always wear unless kept in cotton wool. Although this is not perfect, it’s still one of the best I have personally seen – this almost wears just by looking at it. The record is a beauty and looks hardly even played and sounds superb, one that is very hard to find anything like this. If any late-60s/early 70s prog rock lover has not heard High Hide or needs a copy, this is essential. A truly wonderful album to get the adrenaline pumping, one to totally captivate and blow you away - what a band - what an album – this could remove varnish from speakers if played loud enough. This is up there with the vintage heavy classics like early Black Sabbath, Amon Duul II’s Yeti, and the early acid Hawkwind albums – maybe even better still for my money. Unleash this best kept secret now with this awesome display of dark, heavy, progressive rock - brilliant is too small a word for this one and a record in a condition to savour.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High++, a contender for the most fragile ever made, this has little chance being so soft and black. Few will survive devoid of significant rubbing and heavy penetrating ringwear and many suffer sticker damage, severe creasing and even tears.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and in terms of this immensely fragile cover, this is a very high grading. Allowance has to be made on this one, in real terms an Excellent grading means more and that is the truth. A single unlaminated format with a textured finished and made with VERY soft, thin card. All the recipes for heavy ringwear, creasing, rubbing and scuffing, few will ever be seen with none and this is a very pleasing example. Printed and made in England by Upton.

Cover Front: In terms of rubbing and ringwear, this has faired superbly. Any ring marks are very fine and faint and my camera flash has probably over-emphasised those present a little along with any rubbing which this has little at all. The colourful graphics are totally unblemished as I hope my close-up shot shows. Any marks are few and faint and the lack of speckle (rubbing to the raised textured areas) is massively unusual. A cover so think, holding one corner only will be bending and damage – avoid at all costs. Creasing is always a major factor on this one: this has a little but most-all are light to very light indeed. With no standout ones even approaching moderate, this front sets the bar very high and truly looks gorgeous.

Cover Back: In context, this is superb, okay, a very fine and faint ring mark, but how many will even exist with less? In terms of ink removal or erosion, it barely registers and this even more critically revealing side is still intense black and practically unrubbed or speckled with even fewer creases than the front. By any standards, both sides are exceptional.

Top & Bottom Edges: The top has mainly very light patchy rubbing. The bottom light to just about light+ rubbing. Edges with zero tolerance to any friction movement or storage. Only the fact the lady owner barely touched this for decades means such light rubbing to these edges. Many are seen totally white, threadbare, even split right through. Any record movement on this one means any of the three closed edges could split – not on this one.

Right Edge(s), and Type: As solid as possible and still neat and sharp and guaranteed untrimmed. No tearing at all with no burring worthy of mention, even viewed end-on. Doing so however will reveal just how thin this card is, quite possibly the thinnest I have ever seen, how this one has survived with so little real wear and no damage is beyond me.

Spine and Text: Solid but very thin indeed and I do not think it has compressed to any great degree. Any rubbing light and faint and incredibly most-all of the text is present. Nigh-on impossible to read or even see, I used a magnifying glass and there is! Just a rub to the ‘TI’ in ‘TIDE’, being impossible to read with normal vision, it matters less - incredible any has surived at all being honest.

Corners: Light tip rubs in respect of their edge. NO dinking and all neat with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very impressive High Tide cover, one day a perfect one will come along, but I won’t hold my breath. Most are very tatty, badly aged, torn and threadbare, often looking more like a dartboard with more rings than Saturn. This one is not perfect, but will one ever be offered that is? – I doubt it. Ultra thin, flimsy, soft, black and textured with a heavy record inside. Can you think of anything more vulnerable? This is a superb example in context and it should please most realistic collectors and even the more discerning can consider it. This includes the original plain white unlined inner with a little creasing to one flipback end. That apart barely aged and better than excellent.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with just ultra fine and super-faint surface traces seen critically under light. Very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, it looks barely even played and sounds the same. This wonderful record should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This amazingly powerful record plays even above above it’s visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with an immensely powerful, very rich and dynamic sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted. The volume goes sky-high for a high percentage of this album and any minor surface sound blemishes would be lost anyway. But as with most prog classics, there are some quiet passages too, but not too many on this powerhouse title. I found this album enthralling and it will rip off the speaker cloth if played loud enough. Sonically this is amazing and volume really pushes the system to it’s limits. It almost makes me cringe to think what this record could have been played on all those years ago and the damage to the fragile grooves – but not on this one. Electric violin and guitar could have been a mass of distortion or with high frequency clipping but this simply has NOT happened on this scintillating copy. Dare I suggest the lady owner liked the cover more than the record?, it appears so. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this awesome classic. This record will prove near impossible to find better and is strongly recommended.

End Piece: Already established in my personal hall of progressive rock fame, this is simply brilliant, any fan of Spiral era Black Sabbath, Atomic Rooster and the heavy Krautrock bands will revel in this. Play this loud and be prepared to be captivated. Loud electric guitar and violin do battle with pulsating venom, with no quarter given. This record encaptures this perfectly and High Tide must have been awesome live. The analogue format gives that extra bass power and pizzazz this type of music needs. Obviously rare with guide prices high and they undervalue everything. With both cover and record exceptional, get that amp warmed up and be prepared to be blown-away – Surf’s Up – MEGA!

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
