Description

We pack items very carefully (check feedback) and do not accept returns due to shipping damages.  If you'd like postal insurance, let us know before finalizing payment, and we'll add it to your invoice.  Insurance is not available for USPS First Class International, but is available for USPS Priority Mail International (for most countries).

We use brand-new shipping boxes and packing materials for added shipping protection for records.  There is a $2 handling fee for domestic shipping, to cover the cost of packaging.

MULTIPLE-LISTINGS BUYERS:  Our boxes fit a maximum of five records or two box sets (or similar combination), so we will invoice you once you reach that limit on our "Awaiting Payment" list, even if you still have bids out.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:  Please be aware we ship by USPS First Class International only, unless your order exceeds four pounds in weight, in which case we have no other option that to ship by USPS Priority Mail International.

THREE RCA VITCOR 12" 33 1/3 RPM PROGRAM TRANSCRIPTION DISCS L-11605, 6, AND 7

THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN COMIC OPERA "H.M.S. PINAFORE," PERFORMED BY THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY, complete.

See label pictures for songs list.

I'm going to jump right into the condition of these records: Visually, they have a few light scuffs and scratches, but there are three issues that force me to lower the grade.

First, each side has some kind of storage damage that has clouded the vinyl (or vinyl-like material) for about half an inch on a quarter of each record. I could not clean the damage away. Although the needle plays through the cloudiness, it does cause a swishing surface noise for the first few minutes of each side.  See the ninth photo; all the sides are similar.

Second, my needle abruptly skipped on parts of sides three, five, and six (side three was the worst).  I don't know why; I could detect no flaws that would cause skipping.  I also heard a few ticks here and there.  Surface noise was almost always present, but low.

Finally, there was some distortion of sound here and there.

The last two issues may be because the needle of my inexpensive machine.  I was tempted to add a little weight to the tone arm to see if that would help with the skipping (with a coin), but I didn't.  I know very often RCA Victor would recommend "use only" needles (orange chromium, or the like), and my needle certainly isn't special.

The paper sleeves I found them in have no splits, but one has some small top tears.

If you're still reading, let me put some positive spin on this lot:  This recording is HILARIOUS.  Even with the flaws I was laughing out loud at the performances!  The company that is featured on the recording defined and refined the operetta.

The D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY produced the original production of H.M.S. PINAFORE in 1878, and they owned the rights up until 1961.  The company produced the succeeding ten Gilbert and Sullivan operas and many other operas and companion pieces at the Savoy Theatre in London, which Carte built in 1881 for that purpose. The company also mounted tours in Britain, New York and elsewhere, usually running several companies simultaneously. Carte's able assistant, Helen Lenoir, became his wife in 1888 and, after his death in 1901, she ran the company until her own death in 1913. By this time, it had become a year-round Gilbert and Sullivan touring repertory company.

Carte's son Rupert then inherited the company. Beginning in 1919, he mounted new seasons in London with new set and costume designs, while continuing the year-round tours in Britain and abroad. With the help of the director J. M. Gordon and the conductor Isidore Godfrey, Carte ran the company for 35 years.  The company's rights to the operetta expired in 1961.

NOTE:  I DONT GRADE LABELS -- see pictures for that information.  I use the eBay record grading system when listing 78's, which is mostly based on visual observation of the wax, shellac, or vinyl.  KEEP IN MIND THAT ALMOST ALL OLD 78's HAVE SURFACE NOISE WHEN PLAYED ON MODERN EQUIPEMENT (except the extremely well-made records).  It's only distracting surface noise, as well as ticks, pops, clicks or jumps, that may affect grading.

ALL THE RECORDS I LIST COME FROM ONE COLLECTION, THAT OF JAMES M. KENNEY OF NEW WINDSOR, MARYLAND.  HE WAS ONE OF THE EAST COAST'S LARGEST AUDIO AND ELECTRONICS COLLECTORS.
