HMV ASD 273 White/Gold - Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 6 - Silvestri

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

RECORD GRADING

VERY GOOD

Both surfaces of this record are clean and bright. There are quite a number of very light hairlines but none look to be of the sort which would be likely to cause damage to the sound. This was found to be largely true when listening.

Whilst there is a little light dust type surface noise at times, noticeable at the start of side 1, there are no loud, intrusive sounds. There are, however, light ticks which are at times repetitive – after about 5 minutes, for example, there is one which is quite feint, but repeats, for a couple of minutes as does another a little later. These sounds are really only noticeable in the quietest passages in the early part of this side and none were at all loud.

Side 2 has fewer hairlines though there is one which spans the playing grooves and, again, no serious damaging marks. Surface sound is much less, again only noticeable in very quiet passages, and I heard no repetitive sounds throughout this side.

The record plays very well with excellent sound and, given clean, much of the surface sound commented on would probably disappear - though not those cause by the light hairlines on side 1.

COVER GRADING

GOOD

The cover is made of an unusually lightweight card which has lost its rigidity and does show a number of signs of wear. There are scuffs to all the edges and a split on the front has been repaired with tape. An area of laminate has been lost from the back and this area now is a little soiled. Despite all this, the cover is still structurally sound; it just looks a little tired.
