Jamaican singer John Holt is the best-selling Trojan artist of all time but made a big shift with 1000 Volts Of Holt, here he traded rocksteady restraint for orchestral ambition. Strings swell, Latin guitar figures glide and the material leans toward reinterpreting the classic songbook, yet the core remains unmistakably Jamaican. 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' is handled with poise, while 'Mr Bojangles' carries a quiet ache. There was calculation here - Holt aimed at wider appeal - but it rarely feels hollow. Instead, the album settles into a polished, late-night mood that proved hugely influential, setting a template for crossover reggae without sacrificing Holt's signature sound entirely.
