For sale is a 1st edition vinyl copy of the now classic 1960s Hong Kong's Grace Chang on Capital Records (T10272).

The subtitle for this highly sought after LP says it all: The Nightingale of the Orient singing popular songs in Chinese!

You will not find singing of this caliber on any other record, Chinese or otherwise. Filled with a unique, often upbeat character the songs move along seamlessly with a charming aesthetic that is at once commanding but playful, classical yet experimental, and most importantly the album as a whole maintains a traditional approach while maintaining accessibility to a very wide audience.

When Grace Chang was invited to sing on the Dinah Shore television show she was the first artist from Hong Kong to appear on Amercian TV.  What Impressed the viewers aside from her beauty, youth and vivacity was the mastery she showed in both Chinese and Occidental styles - and the warmth she radiated in her singing.

Grace was born in the Province of Che-Kiang but was raised in Northern China. She received her education in Shanghai and Hong Kong, studying music as well as acting. As soon as she left school, she began making films and recording hit songs for the Gramophone Company of Singapore, who recorded this Album in Hong Kong.


The vinyl is in EX condition without any signs of scratches or scuffs, even the label looks near mint.  There's some very light hiss in the background, nothing overwhelming, and which may just be faint background noise from the original recording.

The jacket would be graded in EX condition if not for writing on the back cover with a marker; it may be easily erased easily but that would be your choice in trying. There's also a very light blemish on the top corner of the cover where a sticker appears to have been removed and very light creasing in this area that's noticeable only up close.  Edges and corners are all EX or very close and have no splits and, for that matter, hardly any signs of handling aside from around the opening edge from removal of the record.

A great addition to any collection, the quality of this vinyl is superb and the jacket, despite it's few unfortunate flaws, is an amazing example of vinyl record and jacket preservation!!
