HOPPER/DEAN/TIPPETT/GALLIVAN (SOFT MACHINE) 1977 LP SCARCE UK COMPENDIUM RECORDS RELEASE - 'Cruel But Fair'
HOPPER / DEAN / TIPPETT / GALLIVAN
Cruel But Fair
SCARCE 1977 UK COMPENDIUM RECORDS (FIDARDO 4) ORIGINAL PRESSING OF "Cruel But Fair" RECORDED BY THE EXPERIMENTAL PROG/JAZZ "SUPERGROUP" HOPPER/DEAN/TIPPETT/GALLIVAN formed in 1976 by former Soft Machine members HUGH HOPPER (bass) and ELTON DEAN (sax), as well as legendary jazz pianist KEITH TIPPETT (King Crimson - Poseidon/Lizard/Islands) and drummer/synth player JOE GALLIVAN (who was originally considered as the replacement for Robert Wyatt in Soft Machine)
THIS IS AN LP OF SUPERB FREE FORM EXPERIMENTAL PROG/JAZZ WHICH IS BEAUTIFULLY RECORDED WITH A CRYSTAL CLEAR, DEEP, RICH AND WARM SOUND AND AN IMPRESSIVE LOUD CUT - SOUNDS SENSATIONAL
MATRIX: FIDARDO 4 A-2E, LYN 4143 (etched "MAX" and "CLIVE") / FIDARDO 4 B-2E, LYN 4144 (etched "MAX" and "CLIVE")
AND THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FULLY LAMINATED AND DEEPLY GLOSSY SINGLE SLEEVE "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd."
Hugh Hopper: Bass
Joe Gallivan: Drums, Percussion, Synthesizer
Keith Tippett: Piano
Elton Dean: Saxophones: Alto, Saxello
Side One: Seven Drones (8:30) / Jannakota (4:36) / Echoes (8:43)
Side Two: Square Enough Fire (9:23) / Rocky Recluse (2:24) / Bjorn Free (2:18) / Soul Fate (5:38)
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with only a couple of light spindle traces - two/three plays only
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, like-new, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - there is a very tiny mark on Side One and I do mean very tiny which unfortunately does cause a few 'ticks' (see detailed audio assessment below) but to all intents and purposes this copy is like-new
VINYL Audio: Stunning audio quality - beautifully clean and warm sound - extremely deep and rich and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) it plays in NEAR MINT condition apart from the tiny mark mentioned above which does unfortunately give rise to a few clicks at the beginning of the gorgeous track "Echoes" - but it's for the first few seconds only and in the overall context of the otherwise stunning quality of this record I would consider these fairly minor. This is a very rare, and quite wonderful LP and a work of real extremes - from the loud and wild free-for-all of "Seven Drones" one one hand, to the quiet, gentle and incredibly beautiful "Echoes" on the other - this is really sensational piece of work and very, very highly recommended for all fans of Soft Machine/Matching Mole etc - fantastic stuff
SLEEVE: The G&L cover is in beautiful NEAR MINT condition with a deep, glass-like gloss to the laminate on both the front and back surfaces and crisp, sharp and unworn edges. The sleeve is very flat with barely enough room on the spine to write all the text but is there - clear and bold
PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT MY PICTURES - I USUALLY TAKE QUITE A FEW SO YOU CAN GET A CLEAR INDICATION OF EVERY DETAIL OF THE ITEM
FANTASTIC LP - A REALLY SENSATIONAL PIECE OF WORK - BEAUTIFULLY RECORDED AND VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
AS WITH ALL MY RECORDS THIS HAS A LOW START PRICE AND NO RESERVE
