released c. 1953 by Peacock release # 1612
original deep groove 78rpm pressing of this
raw & totally amazing original blues stab at the
song "Hound Dog" which later became a hit
for Elvis Presley but this is far better and
it is where it all came from
~ condition ~
in Very Good + Condition & it has been fully
play tested and sounds great without any skips
or repeats & plays with just typical 78rpm surface
noise & the record is shiny & clean but with some
light visual wear but has no cracks & has bright
clean labels with no writing or markings

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton only notched
one national hit in her lifetime, but "Hound Dog"
was a true monster holding down the top slot on the
r&b charts for seven long weeks in 1953 and then
Elvis Presley's rocking 1956 cover was even bigger &
obscured Thornton ~ a shame because her menacing
growl on this track was really special & many
feel Thornton's is the definitive version
Big Mama got her start with Sammy Green's
Hot Harlem Revue in the 1940s Thornton when
she passed through the Houston circuit & signed to
Peacock Records in 1951 and soon debuted on record
but it was her third Peacock date backed by the great
Johnny Otis band that proved the winner with Pete Lewis
laying down some truly nasty guitar behind Big Mama
shouting "Hound Dog" a tune whose authorship remains
a bone of contention to this day (both Otis & the team
Leiber & Stoller claim they wrote it) but it made her a
star, but it was an isolated incident ~ even though she
cut fine Peacock follow-ups "I Smell A Rat" & "The Fish"
"Stop Hoppin' on Me" and "Just like a Dog" she never
again reached the hit parade & even Elvis was apparently
unaware of her when he was handed "Hound Dog" later
on. Early-'60s 45s for Irma, Bay-Tone, Kent & Sotoplay
did little to revive her sagging fortunes but a series of
dates for Arhoolie that included her first vinyl rendition
of "Ball and Chain" in 1968 and two albums for Mercury
in 1969-70 put her back in circulation & Janis Joplin's
overwrought but well-intentioned cover of the tune
helped her make a bit of a comeback
