excerpt of article on modern Taiwanese music at ensemble-modern.com: A very major turning point for new music in Taiwan is the year 1960. In this year, the musician and music ethnologist Hsu Tsang-Houei, belonging to the second composer generation, returned from Paris to Taiwan and gave a portrait concert of his work in Taipei.Hsu Tsang-Houei (1929-2001) was born in Zhang-Hua as the son of a doctor. His grandfather was a Taiwanese poet. At the age of twelve he went to Japan to study violin. He later completed a degree in composition under Hsiao Erh-Hua at the National Taiwan Normal University. He immediately continued his studies in Paris until 1959: violin with Collette de Lioncourt at the Ecole César Franck, music history with Chailley, and composition with Jolivet at the Université Sorbonne, as well as analysis with Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire Paris. After his return to Taiwan, he taught a various universities and actively and enthusiastically encouraged avant-garde ideas for composition. This led to a scandal as he presented the music which he composed during his studies in Paris to his countrymen. No wonder! The atonally conceived music was a great shock for the listener who had been listening only to pentatonic romanticism or Debussy for decades. In the newspapers, several controversial articles appeared about his foreign musical language. However, this concert opened a curtain for the Taiwanese new music scene.
In the 60s, not only did a strong current of westernization occur in music, but also in literature, theater, and the fine arts. New groups striving for a new direction were founded one after the other. They all tried to bring something new and characteristic in their work. With the aim to encourage and support the needs of contemporary music, Hsu Tsang-Houei founded numerous groups, like the Composers Forum (1961-72) with other composers including Shih Wei-Liang, Ma Shui-Long (b.1939), and Hsu Po-Yun (b. 1944). Some of the many important composers who participated in their concert series include Hsu Tsang-Houei, Guo Zhi-Yuan (b. 1921), Lee Tai-Hsiang (b. 1941), Wen Long-Hsin (b. 1944), Chen Mao-Shuen (b. 1936) and Ma Shui-Long (b. 1939). Furthermore, groups like Music Premiere (1961-62), Group Five (1965-67), Sunflowers Group (1968-71) and above all, the Asian Composer's Leage (ACL) founded by Hsu with its base in Taiwan, all came into being. This locomotive of Taiwan's new music has not only presented an almost annual conference in different Asian countries, but has also published scores and books, supported new music events in Taiwan, nourished the cultural heritage of indigenous music, and commissioned works both at home and abroad until today.
