HUEY SIMMONS BURNING SPIRITS RARE 1971 FREE JAZZ 2 LP
Artist:Huey (Sonny) Simmons Title:Burning Spirits Label:Contemporary Year of release:1971 Catalog/Label number:S7625 stereo Condition of vinyl:VG++ to Mint- The glossy vinyl records are very clean! They look close to new with only a few hardly visible sleeve marks. The labels look perfect with no spindle marks. Side 1, 2 and 4 play flat with no warps. There is a very slight warp noticed if looking closely while side 3 is playing. Excellent condition LP's! Play grade:Mint- Both albums were played completely. They both sounded great and played extremely well with no problems. No hiss, clicks or skips. Condition of record cover:VG+ Gatefold cover has almost no ring wear. Front and back of the cover look fantastic. There are no cuts, holes, tears, writing, creases, corner bumps or seam splits. Spine is in good shape. There are some small, light spots/stains along parts of the outer edge on the white inner slick as seen when the cover is open. Both poly lined inner sleeves are in excellent condition with no edge splits. Notes:From Alex Henderson at allmusic: "When Lester Koenig produced Burning Spirits for Contemporary in 1970, jazz was moving in many different directions. Commercially, jazz had lost a lot of ground to rock and R&B, but creatively, it was incredibly healthy and offered a wide variety of options — everything from fusion, soul-jazz, and funky organ combos to bossa nova, Afro-Cuban jazz, modal post-bop, cool jazz, and Dixieland revivalists. Sonny Simmons represented free jazz, which was considered jazz's lunatic fringe (certainly in bop circles) but was exciting and invigorating if you understood what was going on. Many listeners, unfortunately, didn't comprehend free jazz back then and don't comprehend it now; however, those who do understand free jazz will find Simmons to be in top form on this LP. The saxman — who is heard on tenor and alto as well as the English horn — leads a passionate, highly inspired band that boasts Barbara Donald on trumpet, Richard Davis and Cecil McBee on upright bass, Lonnie Liston Smith on acoustic piano, and Clifford Jarvis on drums. That doesn't sound like a terribly avant-garde lineup — most of those improvisers have played inside more often than they've played outside — but make no mistake: Burning Spirits is a shining example of avant-garde expression. Although "New Newk" (which was written for Sonny Rollins) favors an inside/outside approach and offers a modal post-bop groove along the lines of John Coltrane's "Impressions," Burning Spirits is generally more free jazz than post-bop. But regardless of whether Simmons is playing inside or outside (usually outside), the saxman plays with tremendous conviction on this album." Musicians:Huey (Sonny) Simmons; tenor sax, alto sax, english horn - Cecil Mcbee; bass, right channel - Barbara Donald; trumpet - Mike White; violin - Lonnie Liston Smith; piano - Richard Davis; bass, left channel - Clifford Jarvis; drums Songs:BURNING SPIRITS NO. 1 - NEW NEWK - HEALING RAYS - BURNING SPIRITS NO.2 - THINGS AND BEINGS NO RESERVE!

Grading
MINT * Perfect record, clean gloss, no marks. A mint record is uncommon.
M- * Very clean only a few light marks; plays very well.
M- * Album cover - Near perfect with only minor signs of wear. There should be no ring wear.
VG++ * Surface marks, no scratches, should play and look very good with faint, if any, audible surface noise.
VG++ * Album cover - Some minor ring wear, but should be in good condition overall. Also, there can be some minor creases in the corners but no splits in seams.
VG+ * The record shows signs of use, but plays well despite quite visible surface marks and possibly some light scratches. This grading is often used for records which have not been cared for perfectly but still play well overall. A few very faint clicks may be allowed, and will be included in the description.
VG+ * Album cover - May have corners that may be slightly bent, but not broken. There may be wear to the seams but no tears or holes.
VG * Still a nice record, looks used, light scratches, no gouges, still plays fairly well. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music.
VG * Album cover - There may be seam splitting, but not complete separation of the sleeve panels from each other. There will be noticeable ring wear on the cover, but the cover should for the most part be in good condition.
