Brief Info: Hugh Hopper of Soft Machine’s first solo album. A very experimental and challenging album that must be one of the most uncommercial albums ever put on the CBS label. This is Hopper’s ideas and visions based on George Orwell’s novel of the same name. Much quiet, even eerie with use of tape loops, strings and electronics, certainly a daring issue and CBS must have been horrified by its total lack of sales potential, and only the musically adventurous and curious would have shelled out. Thus an album not seen often and this is a lovely copy. Even though there is little volume for much of the recording, it plays impressively clean and very well and will never prove easy to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood, includes the CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Minimal rubbing or creasing, still fresh and clean. Any visual blemishes being few light and faint as mostly seen under light.

Cover Back: Largely the same, any grubbiness or ageing to the white areas being minimal and very light.

Top Edge: Straight with only very light, patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edge: A little more rubbing than the top being light to moderate.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with hardly any compression. The text close to perfect with the main white surface showing only gentle hints of ageing or darkening.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone deep red cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better – finding this at all will not be easy. With most of any wear on the bottom storage edge, this attractive cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined black and white CBS promotional inner that is fresh and hardly aged, minimal creasing and no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Just one apart – that light and minor anyway – anything else is bordering on minuscule even finer than hairlines. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very experimental and avant garde album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Blending strings, reeds with electronics, effects and loops, few could have anticipitated Hopper’s first solo outing would have been this ‘out-there’. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. But with much being quiet and minimal, the odd sporadic tick almost has to be expected. The groove patterns are complex and some very fine indeed, so the odd tiny speck near impossible to avoid sometimes. Any surface sounds however are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this first pressing I feel sure – I doubt if this was even around long before being deleted – this is almost specialist music and very uncommercial. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of note spoilt the listening experience or play-grade, a testing piece for those who like challenging music. This will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
