HUGH MASEKELA & THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA (Motown TMC 5195) RARE South Africa 1st Pressing MINT
RARE original South African first pressing of Hugh Masekela`s first foray into jazz-pop, "Hugh Masekela & The Union Of South Africa" on Motown Records (May 1971).  A near-perfect, archive-quality copy from my own collection!
The Union Of South Africa consist of: Hugh Masekela (vocals, trumpet), Jonas Gwangwa (vocals, trombone) and Caiphus Semenya (vocals, alto saxophone). Produced by Stewart Levine in Los Angeles, CA.
"Hugh Masekela and the Union of South Africa stands as a testament to the benefits of obscurity. It's an album whose ethnic purity is outshined only by its pure emotional power. By the early seventies, Masekela had already scored a hit with "Grazing in the Grass" and was turning his attention to his geographic roots, the South African horn jive dubbed "township bop." This album is simply unsurpassed in its musicianship, and is also a remarkable anti-apartheid statement, coming a full decade or so before it was brought to mainstream America's attention.
Of special note here is the soulful "To Get Ourselves Together", along with beautiful poly-rhythms in "Ade" and "Johannesburg Hi-Lite Jive." Pop-funk influences are evident in wah-wah guitar sounds, prevalent on most of the faster numbers, and Masekela's notoriously crisp solos shine.

Hugh Masekela fans absolutely must have this album; it's tight, inside jazz. Don't expect anything other than quick, major chord progressions and little self-indulgence. GRADING:
EX++ COVER with very minor storage wear. Please see photos for details.
- Original South African sleeve, pressed by "Interpak".
- Minor corner crease at top right. Other than that, the cover is flawless.
- New stock inner sleeve.

MINT(-) RECORD that looks unplayed. A near-impossible find in this condition!
- Perfect vinyl on both sides, with impeccable audio reproduction throughout.
- The record was bought new in the late seventies. It has been played exactly once.
- Absolutely no scratches, scuffs or any other visible signs of previous play at all!
- Original South African first-pressing Motown Records labels with no spindle wear whatsoever.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves state "TMC 5195 A" and "TMC 5195 B".
- This record is certified to be a South African first pressing of "Hugh Masekela & The Union Of South Africa", released in May 1971.
