Originally released in 1995, You'd Prefer An Astronaut served as the third full-length from Champagne, Illinois emotive post-rockers Hum, while many still regard the project as the true arrival of the band they know and love to this day. Combining ethereal walls of fuzzed out shoegazing with bombastic crescendos and aquatic vocals, the seminal record would not only pave the way for their immense 1998 follow-up Downward Is Heavenward, but inspire an entirely new slew of artists not limited to the realms of emo, post-rock, metal and hardcore, with acts such as Deftones, Citizen, Title Fight, Touche Amore and Fleshwater (to name but a select handful) all citing the group and this album in particular as vital influence.
