Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: AMLS 986.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 162 grams. A real heavyweight and way above average for it’s era. Few records of any era were pressed heavier than this.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Quite rare, especially with a barely worn cover and lightly played record. The cover is a work of art and is seldom seen this clean and devoid of wear. This, by a huge distance, the best I have ever seen or heard.

Brief Info: The third Humble Pie album and rarest, and that not taking into account of condition. This was their first album for A&M after the Immediate label folded – an ironic song title on this set was entitled ‘Theme from Skint (See You Later Liquidator)’. A beautifully packed album with striking arwork on front and back, the band picture inside the gatefold is also impressive. This cover is unprotected and very heavily textured, in a similar way to King Crimson’s ‘In the Wake of Poseidon’, but being finished largely in white, few escape grubbiness. The back in contrast has a truly outstanding graphic (as seen on my close-up picture). This dark and richly coloured artwork is almost beyond wear-prone, but here looks stunning as I hope my close-up picture proves. The lack of surface rubbing and speckle to this gorgeous back cover is immensely unusual and apart from a small bottom corner light crease, is little short of as made. The very heavy record is well pressed, which can never be taken for granted on these early A&M’s which sometimes have inherent pressing sounds and even distortion. Early Strawbs albums are particularly known for it. Musically, a change in direction with a slightly heavier sound, the band still featuring the guitar talents of Peter Frampton, destined to leave after the next album. For classic rock collectors and fans of this Marriott-fronted band, a better example will prove immensely difficult to find better – this stunning and totally uncompromising cover sets the bar very high and I can hardly stop looking at it as I compile this listing.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High – all the ingredient for every form of wear possible.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and even this grading does scant justice to this truly outstanding example. An unlaminated gatefold with heavily textured matt surfaces on the outside. The inner is smooth. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: Absolutely stunning! – yes this little short of looking new and truly, I cannot imagine a better example will ever be offered. This ultra fragile front is totally unmarked with no traces of grubbiness at all and I can barely see a crease even worthy of mention. The lack of speckle, friction rubs, scuffs or marks almost beggars belief, but it’s true. The artwork is beautiful and is will never be seen better than this – how can perfection be beaten?

Cover Back: Again, astonishing, I have graded Excellent(++) instead of Mint(-) due to the fine and small crease on the bottom left corner, this apart, it is again perfect. The gorgeous graphic looks like an old master painting on canvas and there is not even one trace of speckle (rubbing to the raised areas) at all. How on earth this has survived over 40 years without any ringwear, and barely even a hint of record rim impression is beyond me. Remember, a thick 160+ gram heavyweight record has been stored inside this cover all this time. Any crease traces are minuscule and look very hard to even see any. Just to reassure myself (and any potential buyer), I have scrutinised the black areas of both front and back carefully under light, and I can see NO evidence whatsoever of any tip-ins or enhancements to these two pieces of fragile artwork. A cover deeply into connoisseur territory and I feel certain, it will not be bettered.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A tiny, possible rub near the bottom left corner, but that’s about it, again practically like new.

Top Edges: Both very straight with barely any traces of wear.

Bottom Edges: Minimal traces of wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Any thickening or burr traces few and tiny. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Very little to fault on this still white spine. A mild totally natural fine central crease line purely from opening. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, all edges meet up closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and with hardly any traces of discolour, makes for an exceptional spine.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is minor and light, the fronts being white mean little registers. All retain very fine to near excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A hugely impressive all-round example of this immensely fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove incredibly difficult to find much better. I hardly believe the two outer faces could really be improved upon, the cover protection for this one has paid rich dividends for any potential future owner, this is head and shoulders above better than any other one I have seen. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a little aged with mildish discolour and glue darkening on the seams. A plain white polylined inner with two near pristine sharp window circles and super-clear, uncrinkled lining. One tiny nick on the front circle only. A little crinkle but edges unsplit. The retailer put the album’s catalogue number on one edge in pen. This is British patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint – no penetrating scratches whatsoever, this is a really impressive record. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Always play-grade early A&Ms with a little trepedation, even unmarked copies can disappoint with pressing sounds or even distortions – the invisible enemy of even brand new records. This cut is clean and does full justice to this album. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
