AS AN exercise in hammer & tongue heavy blues rock, this album has few rivals. Marriott’s soul-infused vocals and the rush of heavy blues pour out of the speakers like an out of control freight train. Seemingly unstoppable, the energy level commences in the red zone and just gets hotter. Like Led Zeppelin, every component is crucial to the overall sound - the heavy bottom end providing a rock solid foundation for the guitar work of Marriott and Frampton, in fact his beautifully economic soloing is underpinned perfectly. Naturally, little Steve Marriott is caught in a relaxed yet mischievous mood, apportioning preacher man vibes to the audience with his deep black voice trapped in a tiny white man’s body. As the governor of heavy soul he has no rival.
‘Four Day Creep’ and ‘I’m Ready’ make for an impressive opening salvo, guitars cranked and feet stomping, but its ‘Stone Cold Fever’ that really pumps up the action. Of course, the most punishing, and by implication, heaviest track on the menu is, ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’, a Pie staple, delivered with dangerous and malicious riffs that have knocked teeth from sockets. The lengthy yet compelling cover of Dr John’s ‘I Walk On Gilded Splinters’ lasts for an eternity - at least a whole side - and finally draws to a close at twenty-three minutes.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
Pressing: A&M, UK, 1971 - Original Brown Labels and when held to a strong light is pressed on opaque blood red vinyl
Vinyl: Double album in top clean and shiny condition with no signs of any use. No visible spindle marks on labels. All four sides grade as top shop fresh MINT-!
Cover: Issued in a wonderfully constructed and fragile gate-fold. Top condition. Sharp corners (one microscopic edge rub), no dings (minor ding to bottom right), no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Grades as a superb almost shop fresh MINT-!
