ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and quite rare LP from Deutsche Grammophon (419 601-1, German pressing, white circle label, DDD stereo) features the splendid Hagen Quartet in magnifcent accounts of Dvorak's String Quartet No. 12 in F Major Op. 96 "American" and selections from the same composer's Cypresses, as well as Kodaly's String Quartet No. 2 Op. 10.
The Hagen Quartet were comprised of Lukas Hagen (1st violin), Anette Bik (2nd violin), Veronika Hagen (viola), and Clemens Hagen (cello).
This is exalted chamber music playing by any measure, and the sound is exemplary – a treasure of a disc from first to last.
The former works were recorded in the Grossersaal of the Mozarteum, Salzburg, in February 1986, while the latter was set down at the Zentralsaal, Bamberg, in June 1986 (producer: Dr. Steven Paul / recording supervisor and balance engineer: Wolfgang Mitlehner).
The engaging cover photo of the Hagen Quartet was taken by Hugo Hehle, Stuttgart. There are superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in German, English, and Italian (by Michael Stegemann), as well as in French (by Jean Gergely).
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is MINT. Although the jacket is not sealed in shrinkwrap, the inner LP sleeve is sealed with a "Steinway Haus" sticker. This is a pristine, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.
