2021/2 reissue for an important piece from the Tribe Collective / the Tribe Label out of Detroit, “one of the brightest lights of America’s 1970s jazz underground.” Real deal deep, spiritual jazz that also incorporates funky bass lines and at moments meshes with a soul jazz vibe. The first track on side 2 (“In The Moog”) however, reminds you that they do not stay confined by any rules. A bit carnival-like, a bunch brilliant.
I was lucky enough to get a couple copies of this album, so one is up for grabs. I would suggest if you’re a jazz head and do not know McKinney or other Tribe chiefs (Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, Phil Ranelin, etc.)
Their story is a treat and part of it can be learned from the ‘oversized booklet’ (per the hype sticker) contained inside the sleeve. Get this rare gem of a record if you want to wake up your bored-to-sleep ears.
