Rarity: EXTREMELY RARE BECAUSE IT IS AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF AN ALBUM WHICH IS GENERALLY VERY RARE – the superb condition exaggerates the rarity. This is one of Roy Harper’s best recognised albums – but the earliest originals like this are very thin on the ground and rarely seen for sale these days. At the time of release Harvest was changing its label design to include their ‘parent’ company’s EMI boxed name logo. When production of the album started the pre-EMI variant labels were being used up, but after a relatively small quantity had been pressed the new labels with the boxed EMI labels were introduced so only relatively few of the VERY EARLIEST FIRST UK PRESSINGS DO NOT FEATURE THE EMI BOXED LOGO ON THE HARVEST LABEL. Also, but of slightly less importance because it continued for a time after the logo appeared, the early pressings carry the H. Ash credits at the bottom of the title tracks on both labels – this was later removed. However, the most important feature in this case is that this album is in absolutely EXCELLENT CONDITION THROUGHOUT and one of the finest examples you are likely to find.

Background and summary of condition: Roy Harper is an extraordinary talent who produced many outstanding albums and Flat Baroque is most certainly one of them. His interpretation and communication of social issues and life in general with his unique incisive wit and eloquence earns him a special place in the history of Folk and Progressive Rock. There have been over the years some inept reviews by critics of his work but for me, and many others, he is one of the most important contributors to genre, ever. This is a fine example of his highly acclaimed fourth album, a FIRST UK PRESSING COMPLETE IN ALL ORIGINAL FORMAT AND SUPERB CONDITION. For those who may not be familiar with the Harvest matrices for this album I mention that there were no UK A-1 & B-1 pressings for this commercial release – they started at this A-2 & B-2. If -1’s do exist at all it is most likely that they were industry or test pressings. THIS IS A VERY IMPRESSIVE EXAMPLE OF A TRULY GREAT GENRE CLASSIC.
