In Search of Space was Hawkwind’s second album, released in October 1971. The band started in 1970. The story goes that they gate-crashed a local talent night at the All Saints, Notting Hill, and, not really agreeing on a name they opted for “Group X”. In the audience that night was the legendary John Peel, and, on his recommendation, they were subsequently signed up to Liberty Records.

The innovative sleeve was designed by Barney Bubbles [Colin Fulcher). Folded, the die-cuts interlock at the front centre, the shapes forming an 'X', the initial character of the title, however when  opened out, the die-cut sleeve forms a bird shape with outstretched wings - like a hawk. The back cover has a blurred shot of ‘Stacia’ dancing on-stage, with text that encapsulates the band: "Technicians of Space Ship Earth, This is Your Captain Speaking, Your Captain is Dead" This was 1970s Acid rock at its best.

Cover: Owing to its complex design this cover is often subject to misuse, most are worn and torn. This copy shows age related signs of handing, light creases, ring-wear, light marks and light scuffing. Having said all that there are none of the usual rips or writing or unpleasant surprises etc., all lines and corners are true, albeit with light wear (please see photos) probably slightly more VG than VG+ but still a nice copy.

Labels: Clean beige UAG labels, no writing, minimum spindle wear solid (see photos) VG+ 

Vinyl: Retains a lovely outward sheen (see photos), under light shows play wear: wispy surface lines, light marks only - all play related but NO surface scratches or otherwise, solid VG+

Audio: Clear sound, solid audio separation, no jumps, sticks or skips. Has very light static on the run in only, both sides. Plays clean, no pops, pips or nasty surprises: plays through at a constant VG+ or better.

No booklet.

I strictly adhere to the Record Collector Magazine's GradingGuide using one + or - as an additional guide:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. 

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
