Various Artists, Headz - A Soundtrack of Experimental Beathead Jams, triple LP on vinyl.
Classic compilation, sorry "collage", on Mo Wax. The claims are a little pretentious - it's not that "experimental" or "avant garde", so don't worry if that is a description that's making you pause buying / listening. Inevitably it's been superceded in terms of weirdness and invention since, but at the time it was probably the coolest thing you could slap on a turntable and it forms the template for what was to come in terms of "illbient". What is certain is that it's very laid back and dripping with cred.
So. Six sides, three tracks each = 18 tracks. A huge crate to dig into a get lost within, to mix and mess with and resample. They've tried to structure it in terms of mood / style, so you may develop a favourite side that you return to above the others. Some of it is downtempo and undanceable in the extreme, lots of jazz samples. The lineup is a wishlist of the Mo Wax roster at that time but also some surprises that you might not expect, loads of people I'm not hip enough to name drop, so it acts as good signpost for further adventures and cool cats to check out. Probably the standout moment is right at the end, with an exclusive version of "In Flux" by DJ Shadow. But there's plenty of diamonds along the way. A very very dark opener from Patterson, that samples a lovely simple bass line from Pharoah Sanders, and a nod to Detroit electro from Autechre included.
This is the pressing with the embossed gatefold sleeve (see photos) - artwork by 3D from Massive Attack - and its in near perfect condition. Standard paper inner sleeves. Vinyl had a tiny bit of surface noise when I gave it a listen, but a good dust should fix it. No scratches, no jumps.
