ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is proof positive that the most beautiful pressing of a given LP is not from the country most typically prized by collectors – namely, England, France, and/or Germany. In this case, it is an Italian RCA pressing. This is more often the case than is frequently realized. The first Spanish pressing of Furtwangler's legendary Bayreuth Beethoven 9th is more beautiful than either its English or French counterparts, though the German edition possibly bests it. Here, the Italian RCA pressing of Heifetz's Bach Sonata 3/Partita 3 album is clearly more attractive than the US, English, French, or German versions of the same recording. Enough said.

 

This lovely LP – a fine collector's copy – from RCA (LM 3-6105, Italian pressing, plum/silver label – ED1, mono) features Jascha Heifetz's commanding and poetic renditions of Bach's Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin in C Major BWV 1005 and his Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin in E Major BWV 1006, recorded at RCA Victor Studios, Hollywood, California in October 1952.

 

From a technical standpoint, Heifetz is well nigh flawless and although some continue to carp that Heifetz was a cold or even a shallow musician, there is more than note-perfect spinning here and Heifetz's organizational powers and unflagging concentration, as well as the great purity of his playing, yield high dividends here and even if he is not your first choice, he must be heard. There is no more beautiful pressing than this early Italian 1950s RCA issue.

 

Incidentally, the front cover art shows a tapestry from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Italian and English.

 

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is a small bend/crease to the upper-right corner, as well as minor bumping to the other corners, but that is all. There are no owners' markings, bends, seamsplits, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy,and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a fine collector's copy.

 

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is truly superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
