Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This outstanding LP – a lovely collector’s copy – from RCA (LSC-2770, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing, red/silver label – ED1, stereo) features a triptych of stunning performances (one chamber music, the other two concertante works) given by three of the great soloists of the last century – violinist Jascha Heifetz, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, and pianist Jacob Lateiner.

These remarkable performances are imbued with an extraordinary frisson arguably remaining – depending on one’s vantage point – unsurpassed on record. This is among the great albums issued by RCA Victor during the 'Golden Age of Stereo'.

The complete contents are as follows:

Haydn: Divertimento in D Major for Violin, Cello, and Chamber Orchestra*

> with violinist Jascha Heifetz, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, and Chamber Orchestra

(rec. at Scottish Rite Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA, on 9 October 1963)

* Note: Originally, the Haydn Divertimento heard here was comprised of selections made by Piatigorsky from the composer’s Baryton Divertimenti, which the cellist arranged for cello and piano; then, composer Ingolf Dahl scored it for violin, cello, and chamber orchestra.

Beethoven: Piano Trio No. 1 in E-flat Major Op. 1 No. 1

> with violinist Jascha Heifetz, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, and pianist Jacob Lateiner

(rec. at NBC Studio A, Hollywood, CA, on 23 March 1964

Miklós Rózsa: Theme and Variations, (Mvt II) from the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra Op. 29a

> with violinist Jascha Heifetz, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, and Chamber Orchestra

(rec. at Scottish Rite Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA, on 7 October 1963)

There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in English (by noted critic Albert Goldberg), as well as in German and French (by R.P.). The photos on the front are uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is very minor edgewear, but reall that is all. Otherwise, the album appears almost as new – overall, this rates as a lovely collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a very fine copy and the playback is superb. Only those requiring completely silent surfaces need hesitate. Overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
