This lovely and very rare 10" LP from Philips (A 00690 R, Dutch pressing, plum Minigroove label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features The Amsterdam Piano Quintet in a sparkling and sonful account of Schubert's "Trout" Quintet D. 667 with the splendid pianist Alice Heksch at the keyboard.

She is joined by first violinist Nap de Klijn, violist Paul Godwin, cellist Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp, and bassist Lion Groen. One can only hope that Alice Heksch's Philips recordings will one day be re-issued in the label's "Original Masters" series – indeed, one could say the same of Nap de Klijn's Philips discography.

Recorded on 27 October 1953, this is exalted chamber music playing by any measure – wonderful.

There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in English only. The memorable cover art is similarly uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is corner wear, as well as discoloration along the open edge and to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although surfaces are not perfectly silent, this is a fine copy and the playback remains enjoyable. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
