Cover: ex- (corner bend) Ultra-rare circa late 1960s lp privately issued by Point Park College, containing performances of avant garde works by the American Wind Symphony Orchestra under director Robert Austin Boudreau. The highlight is one of Badings' finest (and least heard) electronic works, a sidelong symphony for prerecorded musique concrete, live instruments, and experimental wordless vocals, with 2 of the 5 movements for electronic sounds alone ("produced by a variety of oscillators, tone generators and ring modulators, transformed by means of an array of sophisticated techniques involving splicing and rerecording"). Rounded out by the equally experimental Mayuzumi and Penderecki pieces, this item is certainly the rarest Badings electronic lp and a little-known avant garde gem.

Badings was a geologist and composer who studied under Willem Pijper; he experimented with microtonal scales and was an early electronic music pioneer during the 1950s and 60s along with Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Edgard Varese, John Cage, Rune Lindblad, Bengt Hambraeus, etc. He founded the Philips electronic music studio in Eindhoven, where he worked alongside Dick Raaijmakers and Tom Dissevelt. Mayuzumi incorporated modern european ideas including serialism as well 'eastern' philosophical elements such as indeterminacy into his compositions, influenced by John Cage and the 'New York School' (Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown); he was a student of Ikenouchi and Ifukube, was influenced by Messiaen and Boulez, worked with Yasushi Akutagawa and Makoto Moroi, and created Japan's earliest electronic music at the NHK Tokyo studios along with Yuji Takahashi, Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshi Ichiyanagi, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Penderecki is a postwar Polish composer whose works have ranged from electroacoustic and avant garde to neo-romantic, and follow in the tradition of fellow eastern european composers Witold Lutoslawski and Bela Bartok; he was influenced by Edgard Varese, Gyorgi Ligeti, and Iannis Xenakis, the serialism of Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Pierre Boulez, and later the indeterminacy of John Cage and the New York School.
