Classical record connoisseurs know full well the legendary artistic status of both Henryk Szeryng and Antal Dorati. Polish-born, Paris-trained (Premier Prix, Paris Conservatory 1937), adoptive Mexican citizen, Szeryng ranks among the greatest Romantically inspired violinists of the 20th Century. (Arthur Rubinstein wept at Szeryng's transcendent recitals.) Antal Dorati also rates among the greatest orchestral conductors of all time. Here Szeryng and Dorati team up circa 1965, at the apogee of their musical powers, to give us mellifluous accounts of the Mendelssohn and Schumann violin concertos. These gorgeous performances come via an early Mercury Living Presence Stereo album. V.S.O.V. offers today a near-Pristine exemplar of that disk. Original Mercury Living Presence Album from 1965. Serial No. Stereo SR 90406. Deadwax hand-engraved RFR-2 (Side 1) and RFR-2 (Side 2) thus Early Pressings of Early Edition. This Disk is in remarkably fine condition for its 57 years of age. Close visual inspection under bright light shows vinyl retains high gloss sheen on both sides. Two light hairlines (Side 1) are inaudible on playback. Light hairline and errant light stylus track on Side 2 also largely inaudible. Disk Play Graded twice with similar results: Side 1, still Near-Mint, a very few intermittent ticks. Szeryng's lush, elegant performance there in the Mendelssohn comes through prominent and clear, ideal for close study. Side 2, a few more intermittent ticks grading to Near-Mint-. Album throughout still projects the awesome clarity, sharpness of focus, and dramatic sonic range and excitement of original, early Mercury Living Presence Stereo. Inner paper sleeve is an edition of the era and still fully intact. Original Mercury Jacket also easily Near-Mint presenting very high gloss front and fully intact rear and seams. Not a Cut-Out. Very slight scuffing front face bottom and left side, otherwise perfect. Thus a highly collectible and Rare exemplar of one of Szeryng's and Dorati's greatest ensemble efforts with early Mercury Living Presence Stereo showcasing their intimate and lush, elegantly complementary performance styles in core violin concerto repertoire.
