Description

Superb collection of 18 rare operatic/vocal discs
Condition is E to N- (many look un-played)
These discs are the "Historic Masters"
issued by the British Institute of Recorded Sound, 29 Exhibition Road, London SW7.
They are all pressed from the original stampers (masters),
some of which date as far back as 1902. Being pressed in vinyl, the sound is astonishing when compared with
shellac issues of the same recordings. Several are previously unpublished recordings! All are 12" discs unless indicated.
Included with the records is the letter to the original purchaser, who was C Montagu Esq MBE (in Cannes, France). It includes some information about how to care for and play these remarkable records.     The records are in excellent condition and some appear to be unplayed.

HMA 1 (10") Conchita Supervia 1932 PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED RECORDINGS
HMA 2 (10") Fernado de Lucia 1909-10
HMA 3 (10") Hina Spani 1930 (I have listened to these sides - superb singing!) Some small but audible scratches on one side.
HMA 4 (10") Francesco Tamagno (the original Otello, I believe, here singing Ora a per sempre addio (from Otello) and Di Quella Pira! (form Il Trovatore). You can hear here, without the usual surface noise, how this legendary singer used to make the chandelier at Covent garden rattle!) Recorded in 1902!
HMB 5 Mattia Battistini with E Barbieri..the legendary baritone sings Trovatore in 1913
HMB 6 Selma Kurtz 1910 and 1911
HMB 7 Dmitri Smirnov 1912/13 singing French arias in Russian
HMB 8 Smirnov again 1913
HMB 9 Eugenio Giraldoni 1905
HMB 10 Félia Livinne 1905
HMB 11 Conchita Supervia 1932   PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED RECORDINGS FROM FAUST AND DAMNATION OF FAUST
HMB 12 Vanni-Marcoux 1931 singing Massenet and Thomas arias
HMB 13Maria Nemeth 1929
HMB 14 Lucien Fugere 1928 baritone aria from LOUISE / Reynaldo Hahn (the French Composer and singer) singing Maid Of Athens. PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED RECORDINGS.
HMB 15 Maggie Teyte 1944: Le Temps des Lilas (with Gerald Moore and James Whitehead) + two Chausson songs. Wonderful! PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED RECORDINGS
HMB 17 Zenatello and Noto (unpublished) singing OTELLO. THESE RECORDINGS WERE MADE "LIVE" AT COVENT GARDEN IN 1926. PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED RECORDINGS. Really remarkable and rare records of actual performances..HMV must have been trying out the possibilities of their new "electrical" recording equipment.
HMB 18 Eugenia Zbruyeva recorded in Russia in 1913/14 (just before the revolution!) from Glinka's "A Life for the Tsar".
HMB 20 Olimpia Boronat 1908 singing Qui La Voce from Puritani and Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod version).
