redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and famous LP from French Columbia (SAXF 136, French Pathé-Marconi pressing, blue/silver label, mono, dowel spine, "baguette"-style heavy cardboard jacket, stereo) features Samson François' legendary accounts of Ravel's Concerto in G Major and Concerto for the Left Hand, both made with conductor André Cluytens and l'Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire at the Salle Wagram, Paris, the former on 2 July 1959, the latter on 16 June 1959 – gramophone classics that have never left the catalog.
A true keyboard maverick, Francois's playing boasts a flair and visionary quality that leaves many of his contemporaries sounding bland by comparison. He was a risk taker, and while all of his gambits did not succeed, these piano selections are marvelously characterized, imbued with blazing conviction, high drama, and stirring poetry – stunning!
Wrote the critic T.H. in his review for the June 1961 issue of The Gramophone:
"Samson Francois gives a staggeringly good performance of the left-hand concerto, brilliant and expressively beautiful by turn, and he is admirably recorded both in stereo and mono. He is extremely good, too, in the G major, often more delicate in his playing than his best competitors, Michelangeli and Bernstein, and sometimes more wayward, but lacking nothing in glitter and, in the slow movement, in the quiet beauty of his playing. This record of the two concertos (a specially interesting coupling in that they were composed simultaneously) certainly supersedes its only rival, Perlernuter on the Vox record, both for its more exciting piano playing and for the brilliance of its recording. And as far as the left-hand concerto goes it is a clear choice for, Perlemuter apart, Casadesus is extremely poorly recorded.
"If, then, you want a marvellously good performance of this concerto, you will also acquire a very good one of the other. Should you already have Michelangeli or Bernstein in the G major (and not want the left-hand one) you can rest content, for they both remain in the first class (and I am not sure that Michelangeli's performance is not still the finest of all, certainly in its stereo recording—the mono is not quite so satisfactory as the others). But if your library is empty of Ravel piano concertos, I suggest you should rush to acquire these very exciting and beautiful performances."
Incidentally, the superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, were written by Jean-Jacques Normand.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT+. There is a bit of discoloration along the left and right edges, but that is all. There are no other seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains extremely solid, bright, and very attractive in appearance – overall, a very fine collector's copy.
The condition of the dowel spine is VERY GOOD. There is a 2” seamsplit to the ower edge of the paper sleeve and some general wear, but that is all – the dowel is solid and very legible.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are spindle trails and some light marks. In terms of sound, though there is some occasional light surface noise, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or NM, or even NM- copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
