horse Ponder winning the 75th Running of the race
ridden by jockey Steve Brooks

features pre-race commentary by Gillette's Announcers
plus the rendition of "My Old Kentucky Home" performed
just before the actual race & the the Entire 1949 Kentucky Derby
Race followed by race recap & commentary by the Gillette
announcers & then Post-Race coverage including comments
by then Governor of Kentucky Earle C. Clements & by
winning horse Ponder's trainer Ben Jones

the recordings are spread out over 3-Sides that
are recorded at 78rpm & the back side of one record
is still blank & this sort of home-recorded records are
very hard-to-find & are often one-of-a-kind items possibly
even containing the only known existing recordings
of songs, speeches or broadcasts


~ condition ~


these records are visually in Very Good + Condition
and have been fully play tested and the sound fairly good
but this sort of home recorded record doesn't allow for
the highest quality audio, especially if recorded too
far into the side, which causes the recorded information
closest to the middle to be distorted the closer it gets
to the end of the side. we have posted a sound clip of this
recording so that you can hear what it sounds like and
we have also made a cdr copy of the entire recording
which comes free to the winning bidder

note that 78rpm Records are Extremely Fragile
and require extra packing materials, making for a heavier
package requiring higher than usual shipping charges 


~ Ponder ~


Ponder was a dark brown Stallion Sired by Pensive foaled
1946 bred at Calumet Farm under Trainer Ben A. Jones with

Grandsire Hyperion & Dam Miss Rushin and the Damsire
was Blenheim II. Ponder's record over 41 Starts was 14–7-4
with total earnings of $542,275 and major wins in 1949 at the
Kentucky Derby, the American Derby, Arlington Classic, at the
Jockey Club Gold Cup, Lawrence Realization Stakes and at the
Peter Pan Stakes + then won in 1950 at the Santa Anita Maturity,
Arlington Handicap, San Antonio Handicap, Tanforan Handicap,
and at Marchbank Handicap. This Thoroughbred racehorse was
the son of the '44 Kentucky Derby winner Pensive and sire of
the winner of the '56 Kentucky Derby Needles & when Ponder
won the Derby in '49 Pensive, Ponder & Needles became the
only grandfather, father and son in history to all win the
Kentucky Derby. When Ponder later went out to stud at
Calumet he produced Needles in his very first crop
and Ponder later died in 1958 a great horse

in the 1949 Kentucky Derby the horse Olympia led for
the entire first mile with Capot right on his heels. Ponder was
ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Steve Brooks & was dead last in
this race & was twelfth after six furlongs & up to sixth as the
field turned for home & Ponder began to turn it on with his
gain described as "relentless" sweeping past them all winning
the Derby by three lengths. Capot held on for 2nd but the
favored Olympia had faded to sixth with Ponder running
the last quarter in just about :23 4/5ths


~ 1949 Kentucky Derby Recap ~


Start good from stall gate. Won driving; second and
third the same. PONDER, away slowly, gradually worked his
way forward while racing on the extreme outside, responded
to brisk urging entering the stretch and, after wearing down
the leaders, won, but had little left. CAPOT, forwardly placed
from the start, went to the front settling into the stretch, held
on willingly, but was unable to withstand PONDER, although
easily best of the others. PALESTINIAN, well ridden and saved
ground to the stretch, then made a bold bid when set down
in the drive, but faltered during the last 16th. OLD ROCKPORT
on the inside and never far back, could not get to the leaders
when hard ridden through the stretch. HALT passed tired horses
during last three-eighths. OLYMPIA made the pace until inside
the stretch then gave way. MODEL CADET moved up after going
the first half mile, then tired. DUPLICATOR, on the outside
throughout, never seriously threatened. JOHNS JOY roughed at
first turn and again nearing the upper turn, failed to rally
when clear. KY. COLONEL was far back throughout. LEXTOWN
had brief speed. JACKS TOWN was through early. WINE LIST
could not keep up. SENECAS COIN was overmatched
and pulled up hopelessly beaten
