This beautiful and rare LP from Valois (MB 327, French pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features Henri Honegger’s remarkable accounts of Bach's Suites for Solo Cello No. 1 in G Major BWV 1007 and No. 2 in D minor BWV 1008, from his second complete cycle, which was recorded in the rich acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva in March 1972 (producer: Michel Bernstein / engineer: Georges Kisselhoff).

The sound of the cello has often been likened to the human voice and few have made it sing in these Suites as did Henri Honegger, a pupil of Pau Casals. He is not a reticent player, and his full-throated Bach playing, full of ardor yet wonderfully refined, is truly extraordinary – this is exalted Bach playing by any measure.

Incidentally, there are superlative liner notes – printed in French only – by the renowned musicologist Harry Halbreich. The striking cover art was executed by Atelier CLD, Cambray-lès-Tours.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the laminated jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear at corners, as well as mild discoloration, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Visually, there is some writing to the label on side 2. In terms of sound, although surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
