From 1961 this Horace Parlan date has everything that helped Blue Note establish the funk oriented hard bop sound that would become its signature. What makes this album so special to me is the playing of Tommy Turrentine. Tommy had an original trumpet sound in which he would use all of the registers of the horn from bright and high to low and deep; all with the unpredictable sharp attack and timing of his solo phrasing and harmonic ideas that, in my opinion, was more advanced than many players. Brother Stanley cruises along with solid support from Horace, George Tucker and Al Harewood but its Tommy that makes me stop what I am doing to lift up my head to listen to see what he does next. Unfortunately, Tommy was afflicted with a virulent self- destructive case of alcoholism which precluded his ability to be recorded as often as he should have been. He could write too; listen to "Enitnerrut" (Turrentine spelled backwards) that he wrote and plays on with Jackie McClean’s Blue Note date: “A Fickle Sonance” also recorded in 1961 before his chops fell apart. This album catches both the Turrentine Brothers in good form and, if you haven’t heard him before, will introduce you to the unique talent of Tommy Turrentine. __
