Hüsker Dü, the Punk/hardcore trio were formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, in January 1979. Hüsker Dü (which means "Do you remember" in Danish and Norwegian, but is actually spelt without diaereses) mixed pop and punk music and consisted of guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist Greg Norton and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. They started out as a punk band before gravitating toward hardcore, then expanding into more melodic songs.
Mature and ambitious: On their 6th album, the trio from Minneapolis finally turned their backs on hardcore punk and preferred to exchange musical destruction for melody. The stylistic development that Hüsker Dü has undergone over the years can only be trusted by very few bands with a similar background. Especially if you have your roots in punk rock. But Hüsker Du's unmistakable closeness to simple pop was known for a long time and therefore this album is perhaps a kind of forerunner for many alternative bands that repeatedly broke the limits of the underground in the coming years. On “Candy Apple Grey”, the band for the first time strove to dispense with the typical stylistic devices of punk and to play clean compositions. Only in “Crystal” does singer Bob Mould tear his vocal cords once again. Drummer Grand Hart, on the other hand, contributed two catchy tunes with “Sorry Somehow” and “Dead Set On Destruction.” The two were considered an absolute dream team right up to the end, especially because they differed greatly in their songwriting and in turn also complemented each other. “Candy Apple Grey” was the compromise, the middle in which two guys met who actually never really liked each other.
