CAN'T HELP LOVIN' THAT GIRL OF MINE/DON'T GO (Valiant #6049 PROMO 1st pressing, 1964): VG+ 45 w/"x" on label.
Rare PROMO 1st pressing! Can't Help Lovin' That Girl Of Mine is a cover of the 1927 Showboat classic, done with 4 Seasons-ish vocal harmonies by Danny & The Memories on this 1964 release. Valiant reissued this single again (with a different record number) a year later, but it's this '64 pressing that's scarcest. It's got VG+ vinyl with an "x" on one label & will sound great on your turntable, jukebox...or put it in The Vault!
Danny Whitten (1943-1972) was best known for his later work in Neil Young's backing band. It was just after the huge success of Neil's Harvest LP, while working on After The Gold Rush, that Whitten was dismissed from Crazy Horse for his out-of-control drug use. Danny died of a combination of drugs & alcohol the same day he was fired.
It's widely (and erroneously) thought Neil Young wrote The Needle And The Damage Done about Danny Whitten's death. In reality, Young composed the song about the destruction of a musician's talent by drugs while Danny was still alive, perhaps hoping Whitten would heed its warning. Unfortunately, he didn't, and a devastated Neil Young commented, "Danny had a lot to give, boy. He was really good."
