Label/Format: MCA – intense matt black format with smooth surfaces. This album was pressed on several different MCA format labels, the reason being most did not last very long before being changed. Of the earlier Decca-pressed versions, I have had them all at some time. But this version the least so far, this one made in 1973 as confirmed by the inner sleeves.

Label Conditions: Four beautiful clean examples and so nice to them at last on the scarce black format that was probably the last Decca-pressed version for MCA. Any spindle very few, fine and faint and both records offer nigh-on pristine sound quality.

Cat Number: MKPS 2011/12.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 147 / 140 grams. Very good solid heavy pressed Decca records.

Rarity: Moderate in terms of units sold. An album issued on several MCA variant labels that was forever being changed from the dogbone format to the rainbow (non-Decca) pressings – and all inbetween. I consider these late Decca black MCA labels probably the rarest of all. Those who bought this on issue when very much in vogue, bought the earlier copies and the black label seemed to be available the least amount of time.

Brief Info: One of Tim Rice’s and Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s earliest musicals and for me this is one of the very best. This is a real rock opera and will delight heavy rock fans especially as it features Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan singing the lead role of Jesus Christ. Mary Magdalene’s part is sung superbly by Yvonne Elliman and features the sublime ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, one of the most enchanting songs within this genre. Hearing on its ‘home’ album makes it sound even better. The anthemic overture will be known to all and sounds stunning within the whole album, it even gave me that rare tingle factor when it reappears towards the end of the set. Seldom found complete on the black labels with a very clean, little-worn cover - the difference this makes for pleasure is immeasurable. The records are beautifully pressed by Decca and appear hardly even played – both sound magnificent. The 12-page book with lyrics and all details is included too and also in very fine condition. With Gillan featuring heavily on this album and in classic form too, this will appeal to Deep Purple fans and collectors. For those wanting a quality example on this more elusive, and still quite early label variant, this will not prove easy to beat.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace and includes both the original date-coded inners and the libretto book.

Cover Front & Back: The unlaminated cover with vivid colour is very prone to wear, the back especially for ringwear which is rarely avoided. Well this one has, and one of the very few I have seen to do so. Any marks or creases are few, very light and faint as mostly seen with angled viewing. A small top left corner crease but not a great deal else, the back, so often left unshown for obvious reasons, exceptional – if you got it – flaunt it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again exceptional, the purple left side again often ruined by rubbing and ringwear. Any faint surface traces gentle and light again under light. The right pictures of Christ are immaculate.

Top Edges: Both straight and barely worn at all.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, and on storage edges this is unusual but most welcome.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with little wear and minimal traces of thickening and burring even viewed end-on. Records entered on these right open edges that are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. The front not quite flush in the manufactured trim.

Spine and Text: A superb spine and rarely seen as such. Solid, straight with minimal compression, just a slight tilt to left being critical. Folded squarely so the edges are parallel and meet together near flush - allowing for the gentle left tilt on the right edges. The deep purple ink unworn, even on the vulnerable fold hinges and all text pristine as seen in the close-up pictures.

Corners: Any tip rubbing tiny and very light, a small crease on the top left as stated above already. But very fine to most excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A beautiful item when found this clean and fresh, this unforgiving cover does not wear well unless carefully stored and this one has been cover-protected for most of its time. The very small corner crease apart, this will prove difficult to find much better and should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: Both around EXCELLENT: these the original Decca style polylined inners that are mirror-image design with the 5-73 (May 1973 – so still early) date-codes. Slight ageing with the usual darkening of the seam adhesive. The linings are still clear and fresh as seen through four undamaged and crisp window circles. Again these quality protective inners give a more de luxe feel as the later ones had only plain white unlined types. No edge splits or repairs, one has a couple of creases.

The Libretto Book: EXCELLENT(+): 12 pages, no significant creases, just a few light thumb ruffles. Both original staples are quite solid with minimal loosening. A very slight hint of darkening on the outside cover edges being a little critical of a 41-year-old book. Great singer pictures including Gillan and Elliman and a young Andrew Lloyd Webber, this has all the lyrics included.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual pair that are very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed on top quality Decca vinyl – for me the very best record manufacturers ever. Although a little later pressing, the Decca quality never diminished and these two records actually heavier than some I have had abore. Any surface marks or traces very light and faint as seen under bright angled light, I am certain neither disc has hardly been played many times. This pair should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: The more times I hear this album the more I love it, I can easily see why this appeals to rock fans. Both records play even above their impressive visual gradings with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Minimal surface sound and no pressing issues, this pair give a great account of this classic rock opera. Few copies will match or outperform these very early Decca-MCA pressings I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these records that have never been exposed to any vintage old record players. Gillian gives his all and is brilliant, I would still think some Deep Purple fans are unaware he appears on this rock opera. Finding these Decca pressed records better will prove difficult, and with the lovely clean, little-worn cover and book, this splendid set merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
