Label/Format: Vertigo – Original full Spiral on side one and large Spiral logo on side two.

Label Conditions: Both immaculate and in truly stunning clean conditions. Ultra clean and highly attractive with no grubbiness or discolour to the ‘white side’. Simply reference standard ‘large’ Spirals. Side two retains a superb snowy white finish that is as fresh and clean as press day. A very snug fit on my Linn spindle with no ‘give’ whatsoever, I would think this record has not seen light of day since the early 70s. The large spiral on side one has the design perfect right up to the very hole rims with no chipping, mottling or wear at all. Just two or three tiny, faint spindle marks/traces each side, just the way discerning collectors and Spiral connoisseurs want them.

Rarity: Getting scarce like so many titles on this label. With the original early large spiral on side two it’s scarcer still, hardly a massive seller again like the majority on Vertigo. This too one of the most wear-prone covers in the range and seldom seen looking this clean and unrubbed or ringworn.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Firstly, I have listed this under ‘progressive’ because that’s where most Vertigo collectors look for their albums, but this is more folk-rock. The first of two albums the former Fairport Convention vocalist made for Vertigo. A truly wonderful album and for me anyway, one of the best on this classic label. Not found so often and it’s one of the real tough ones to find in better conditions, the cover especially being a real challenge to even find very good. Very darkly finished and unprotected like most all on Vertigo Spiral, this is also textured making wear almost mandatory. This one has very little and looks really lovely. The record is in superb condition and without doubt, hardly played. A difficult Spiral and this one should please most collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+: all the ingredients includes for rubbing, ringwear, fading and sticker damages. Seldom seen this clean.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): a gatefold format, unlaminated with a textured finish on all surfaces. The back has the boxed VO Price Code text on the top corner. Printed in the UK. Record comes with its original Spiral inner. Worthy of a second look, only rarely will such a clean example be seen or offered.

Cover Front: A superb front will barely anything to fault - a tiny mark near the top left corner, a likely small manufacture blemish or a minor mark within the card, whatever, it’s small and minor. One mega-fine and faint surface crease trace and that’s about it. Simply a remarkable front for a massively challenging design. The rich deep colour if fully retained wih no rubbing to the textured surfaces that remain speckle-free. No grubbiness or scuffing and even the spine folds and edge ends are virtually as printed. Remarkably wonderful.

Cover Back: Against all the odds, this back is ever better than the front with barely anything to fault. The huge bonus is the lack of ringwear which is near impossible to avoid on this one. Uncreased, unrubbed and practically unblemished – a couple of small and faint press marks and odd near microscopic chip being ultra critical, this back is truly exceptional given the facts.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Simply STUNNING: this is little short of as made and is eye-candy for Vertigo collectors.

Top Edges: Practically rub-free and very straight and unscuffed.

Bottom Edges: Ultra light and faint rub traces.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both again in supreme conditions: clean, very sharp with barely any traces of wear and guaranteed untrimmed. More unusually, the record enters on the FRONT edge, the back being fully sealed.

Spine and Text: Practically Mint as made. Solid, thick, straight, uncompressed and very square, both right edges meeting up near perfectly and parallel. All text present and unworn as is the whole of spine area, even the fragile folds retain all ink.

Corners: Quite possible for the first time, I can actually state all six corners on a Vertigo non-laminate are practically Mint as made. Immaculate pointed shape retained and barely a tip rub or wear trace to be seen. Remarkable?, I should say so.

Cover Summary: What a joy to see the really delicate and wear-prone covers looking so new looking. Only with the utmost care and can they ever survive like this. I doubt if this has seen daylight since the early 70s and clearly, it has been hardly been touched and cover protected from new. The evidence is clear and for all to see. One for the highly discerning Vertigo collector and conoisseur collector.

The Spiral Inner: EXCELLENT: with a little marking down due to browning on the seams via the glue used in construction. In terms of real wear, barely any. This retains a solid and very clear lining and both the windows are immaculate and all edges unsplit (or repaired). This album was issued in January 1971 and yes, this has the very prized and ultimate original inner that is date coded 0171 (please see this in close-up). It’s the small details that make the difference for the specialist collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++), and a whisker off Mint(-), in all but exceptional circumstances, my highest ever grading. A superb Spiral and very attractive with a lovely shiny finish, intense black and quite heavily pressed. The odd minor surface mark, anything else if tiny and ultra fine and visually a super swirl that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This exceptional Spiral album plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with lush production. A mostly acoustic album with some orchestration, this is a delicate album and top quality, little played pressings are essential for maximum enjoyment and this is just that. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and I noted no significant pops or clicks and this proved to be a highly enjoyable play-grade. Few copies will play better than this in their entirety, albums this great age so often will have the odd mark or sound blemish – that’s vinyl – but this this an exceptional example that’s barely been played or likely handled. Like the splendid cover, this will take some beating. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this scarce ultimate original Spiral gem. Given all the facts the record, cover and even inner are all in very strong conditions.

End Piece: A talented singer-songwriter famed for his early albums. Probably a slight surprise to see his name on this experimental, largely progressive label, but a welcome one. With Thomson and Denny making appearances too, this should appeal to Fairport Convention fans and collectors. With a close to a pristine cover, how many will be seen better? Most Vertigo collectors should be pleased to have this one in their collection and with more collectors trying to put a full set together this is not one to dismiss lightly – I can strongly recommend this lovely album and copy.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
