Label/Format: Vertigo – Original full Spiral on side one and large Spiral logo on side two, both have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both clean and fresh, slight friction darkening near the hold of side two with spindle marks light+, lighter on side one. Also on side one, the original owner put an encircled ‘A’ in fine pen under the text SIDE A, quite why it was deemed necessary I have no idea, but anyway, it is there.

Cat Number: 6360 034.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. An average weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Getting scarce like so many titles on this label. With the original early large spiral on side two it’s scarcer still, hardly a massive seller again like the majority on Vertigo. This not a perfect copy with a few blemishes – a fine mark pen mark on one label (as mentioned above), a name on the inside top left cover and minor sound blemishes being critical. But still a fine example that many Swirl collectors will enjoy.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The first of two albums the former Fairport Convention vocalist made for Vertigo. A truly wonderful album with some lovely music and songs. Including wonderful backing musicians as listed above, this album is a genuine triumph. At one time, this was not quite so difficult to find, but nowadays even this one is fast becoming elusive. Hence I have no hesitation on offering this copy that has a few blemishes, but has more positives than negatives. For sure, it will proudly fill another gap in many Vertigo collector’s collection.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+: all the ingredients included for rubbing, ring wear, fading and sticker damages. This is a very sound example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): not taking account for a name inside, any grading opinion on that is purely subjective, so I just mention it is there. This an unlaminated gatefold format with a textured finish on all surfaces. The back has the boxed VO Price Code text on the top corner. Printed and made in England. Record comes with its original Spiral inner.

Cover Front: This nice with not a great deal to fault on a very unforgiving surface that will show any blemishes or wear freely. Mild traces of grubbiness on the white area of the window, and mild rub traces on the very edges and corner tips, but hardly any creasing or rubbing to the dark areas – the odd tiny trace near impossible to avoid totally.

Cover Back: Quite similar with the huge bonus of no ring wear, which I have rarely seen before on this cover. One small corner tip crease and a small rub on the top left corner area, little else to fault bar the odd microscopic surface chip.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Lovely artwork with little to fault bar the name on the top left, on a fairly dark area in dark pen, so more discrete, but present nonetheless. A few tiny marks or minor surface scuff traces, but these textured surfaces take no prisoners and still look impressive.

Top Edges: A little light central rubbing to the back, anything else light, small and faint. Both remain straight with wooliness to the soft card.

Bottom Edges: Moderate but patchy rubbing to both, the odd tip-in likely, but noticed hardly any of these on this cover.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Just to be different it the usual Vertigo way, the entrance is on the front. The back has a real edge that is tucked and folded, this is superb with hardly anything to fault. The front opening pair are quite sharp with little wear, a little thickening or minor burr traces seen viewed end-on. No trimming or enhancements to these fragile edges guaranteed.

Spine and Text: The spine is exceptional and has little to fault: solid, quite thick, straight, uncompressed and folded square. So the edges meet up flush and and parallel. All text present and unworn as is the whole of spine area, even the fragile folds retain near full ink coverage.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing, lighter on the spine pair, fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover more often seen in very poor conditions. This not perfect as clearly described above, so not for the discerning Spiral enthusiast, but many collectors will be happy I feel sure. Given all the facts, thsi is still a highly respectable example.

The Spiral Inner: EXCELLENT: with just a little mild darkening or gentle ageing, but no damage. In terms of real wear, barely any. This retains a solid and very clear lining and both the window circles are as made. This album was issued in January 1971 and yes, this has the very prized and ultimate original inner that is date coded 0171, these make the difference for the specialist collectors. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine Spiral, attractive with a fine shiny finish, intense black and solidly pressed. Fine whispy surface traces and the odd minor thicker hairline seen under bright angled light, but no penetrating scratches. The label pen mark apart, this record is still a very nice looking piece and should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quite elusive swirl album plays generally above it’s visual grading with little to fault. The final short orchestral instrumental on side one has a little patchy, quite light surface sound, and the same goes for the last song on side two. Slight crackle with traces of clarity loss on my very revealing LP12 that takes no prisoners. But the majority has high sound quality with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with lush production. A mostly acoustic album with some orchestration, this is a delicate record, a little minor imperfection is never a major surprise even on what appears to be a very modestly played copy. Any other surface sounds are minimal indeed and I noted no significant pops or clicks and this generally proved to be an enjoyable play-grade, but not for the audiophile perfectionist who only want ‘pristine’ as any cost. Still a fine example and it should still please many collectors.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
