Although the album title intimates that this might be a live recording, it is, in fact, a studio set, consisting entirely of covers. Ian & the Zodiacs' debut is decent, and certainly a cut above most similar such items. Their version of "The Crying Game," with its mournful, tone-pedal guitar mimicking the sound of a trombone, sounds much like Gerry & the Pacemakers' hit ballads such as "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," and it actually sounds better than the famous British hit rendition of "The Crying Game" by Dave Berry (and even had some success in Texas). That tone-pedal guitar appears on a few other cuts -- such as "This Empty Place," the unlikely instrumental "Spartacus," and "Take a Message to Martha" (a gender-rewritten version of "Take a Message to Michael") -- and was the most innovative feature of the band. The rest of the record's filled out by competent, if unremarkable, vintage and contemporary rock and soul covers, as well as a pretty fair rendition of a Jagger-Richards song ("So Much in Love with You") that the Rolling Stones never released. The band's Achilles heel was the usual bugaboo among second-line Merseybeat bands: there are only two originals among those bonus tracks. Still, they were certainly better than some other cover-reliant British Invasion bands that had more success., and could well have had hits had they managed to get their hands on some good outside material.]

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY RICHIE UNTERBERGER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          Gold Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 20:1.

(e)          In addition, stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(f)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(g)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (nothing significant)  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-       Cover has some tiny, faint, writing (letter "S" written in blue ballpoint pen on its back side

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER

CRITICALLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

(A) All orders valued at $50.00 or more will be shipped fully insured against loss, damage or theft by ShipCover, eBay's contracted insurer, at our expense (B) Yes, we do combine items into a single shipment; in order to enable this feature, the winning bidders should WAIT until their last item of interest ends and ONLY THEN make a payment. We can only make reasonable inference on the record's playing condition based on its visual appearance. (D) This seller will NOT cancel erroneous, frivolous and prank bids. The bidders can do so on their own, by visiting eBay's Site Map, then clicking on Bid Retractions link. (E) This seller does not specifically grade or describe certain items, such as: shrink (cellophane) wrap and accompanying extras (inserts, booklets, etc.); however, the presence of these items WILL be noted and accompanied by the gallery photo(s). (F) Please do not submit any bids on our items if you have insufficient user history. (G) Other than in very rare justified cases, failure to pay for the item you won amounts to a fraud and will result in a permanent ban on bidding on our future listings.
