Description
HERE'S a song I had to include this week for the title alone: "I'D RATHER BE A LOBSTER THAN A WISE GUY," sung by the indefatigable BILLY MURRAY!
Written by savvy songwriter Theodore Morse, it's a rare, rueful admission from a slicker, a "Wise Guy," copping to the fact that the suckers, or the "Lobsters," seem to have the upper hand after all:
I’d rather be a lobster than a wise guy,
I’d rather be a ‘good thing’ than a ‘sport’ –
The “Lob” may be a joke
But still he’s never broke
The Wise Guy is the one who’s always short!
Don’t worry about the man who gets the lemons
He’s bound to get the peaches when they fall.
And the more of life I see
It really seems to me
That the “Wise Guy” is the “Lobster” after all!
THE flip side is a lively sketch "AT THE VILLAGE POST OFFICE" by the VICTOR VAUDEVILLE COMPANY. It makes one nostalgic for a time out of living memory, when the local post office was the place for gossip, two-cent stamps, kids practicing fiddle, and a dog-and-cat fight.
This original 1908 "Patents" Victor 16036, actually one of the first double-sided records made by that company, is in nice V+ condition. A little wear, a few scratches.
*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
