'IGGINBOTTOM'S WRENCH' ORIGINAL1969 PROG/JAZZ DERAM LP
When you’ve got Allan Holdsworth in your line-up, we’re not talking average sixties beat combo. Holdsworth is the guitartists’ guitarist who has become one of the most respected jazz-fusion players. This is a very early musical document of the founding member of Soft Machine and later member of Gong and along with David Freeman on bass, Steve Robinson on the other guitar and Mick Skelly on drums they formed ‘Igginbottom’ and after just three months together in 1969 and under patronage of Ronnie Scott, recorded this, their one and only album, ‘Igginbottom’s Wrench’.
Producing and managing the band at this time were three guys from one of the sixties most successful ’pop; bands ‘The Love Affair’ bassist Michael Jackson, drummer Maurice ‘Mo’ Bacon and Keyboardist Morgan Fisher. According to Jackson ‘The music they were playing was like nothing I had ever heard before, and the standard of their musicianship was incredibly high.’ Their first London gig was at the renowned Ronnie Scott’s Club in the company of such legends as Barney Kessel. For Morgan fisher, These musicians were light years ahead of the rest of us – all I felt we could so was to make sure that everything was well recorded.’
Back in 1969 the now late Ronnie Scott wrote in the original sleeve notes: ‘Igginbottom are unique and completely original. They may well be the first group that has, completely naturally and unselfconsciously, evolved out of the ever-converging directions of good pop and jazz’.
‘Disc & Music Echo’ described the original album as ‘by any standards, quite exceptional’.
It’s kind of arty, theatrical psychedelia with some prominent jazz influences weaving in and out, though I’d categorize it as predominantly jazz of the Canterbury scene genre. It’s great fun, will delight Hodlsworth’s fans and anyone into late ‘60s progressive rock or jazz/rock fusion.
This value of this copy is augmented by it being signed clearly on the rear sleeve by two of the band, Robinson and Skeely. Sleeve and vinyl are in Ex condition. This turns up once in a blue moon. It’s only the second copy I’ve managed to track down in 25 years of record record collecting and dealing. It sold in tiny numbers at the time and was almost instantly deleted. Copies are scarce, in nice condition like this, you’ll be waiting a long time for another to surface. I’m starting this at what I think is a realistic price for such a collectable of such scarcity and importance.
