I’m listing a bunch of progressive rock and related items this week.
Ys by Il Balletto di Bronzo is an absolute masterpiece of Italian prog rock. But this is not prog rock in the vein of, say, PFM or Banco; it’s more in line with the record by Semiramis. Ys is hard ‘n’ heavy, psych-tinged prog, with slashing fuzzed guitars, eerie organ, Mellotron, and Moog synth, plus the voice of Gianni Leone with its breathtaking range and delivery. If you like your music dark and intense, this is for you. Usually gets listed within the top ten or so Italian prog rock albums, and with good reason—you need this like you need air to breathe!
Ys was originally released in 1972 on Polydor. This is the Japanese Polydor issue from around 1985, I believe. It exactly reproduces the original Italian press: it comes in a gatefold cover that includes the 4-page booklet glued into the inside cover. In addition, it includes the coveted obi (paper band with album information that goes around cover). Best of all, the cover is in M- and the record is in MINT condition! The Japanese pressings were exceptionally good (audiophile enthusiasts know...) and this frankly sounds even better than the Italian pressing.
PS: The reunited Balletto di Bronzo played at Baja Prog in Mexicali, Mexico (a country whose prog/hard rock fans adore this band!) a little over a week ago. Hope some of you reading this got to see them!
