The Illusions offer a reminder that Ibiza's musical life stretches well beyond the obvious postcard version. The island-based seven-piece collective arrive here with a debut that's informed by years of jam sessions on the east coast, and later refined with producer Nathan Haines behind the desk. You can expect a warm, live-sounding blend of jazz and Balearic groove, with the band working as a single unit and far removed from any studio sheen. 'Juju Mellow' moves atop a tightly wound percussion groove, then 'PSALMS' heads deeper into spiritual jazz-flecked waters. Best of all is the 12-minute 'Slow It Down', where their loose chemistry gets the space it needs.
