A LETTER DATED 6 NOVEMBER 1973 FROM IMOGEN HOLST (DAUGHTER OF GUSTAV - COMPOSER) ON HEADED NOTEPAPER FROM HERE HOME IN ALDEBURGH SUFFOLK. WRITTEN IN PENCIL:

"Dear John,

I've beeni having difficulty with photo-copying my father's Diverus & Lazarus for the Suffolk Singers. There's only one copy in existence, 50 years old, yellow, crumpled and wearing out. I enclos a copy for you to see how unsatisfactory it is. So I've done a manuscript copy, which I hope will be clear enough for the singers to read. Do you think Fred Ferry would be kind enough to ask someone in his office to get it duplicated, and send the bill to me?

I'm afraid the copies can only be lent to the Suffolk Singers, because there are complications over copyright. It is out of print, but Stains & Bull are allowing me to make my own copies for this particular performance (oe series of performances, if the Singers want to do it elsewhere before the Festival). And I've done my own 'illegal setting of Verse 3, to give it more variety.

You'll be glad to know that Ben is getting better and better every week - he's play piano duets, Mozart sonatas, and recording duos.

REFERENCE TO 'BEN ' IS CLEARLY BENJAMIN BRITTEN

I FOUND THIS LETTER AND MANUSCRIPT IN A BOX OF RECORDS THAT i BOUGHT FROM THE RECIPIENT'S WIDOW. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT IT'S GENUINE.
