SONGWRITER JIMMY McHUGH probably had no idea his name would boldly be put forward as a bandleader on this record, which was a bit of promotion for the show he and Dorothy Fields wrote in 1928, "HELLO, DADDY."
But what's in a name? "Jimmy McHugh's Bostonians" actually is a stellar bunch of Jazz Men, all members of Ben Pollack's orchestra, who were occupying the pit for this very show. BENNY GOODMAN (clarinet), JACK TEAGARDEN (trombone) and JIMMY McPARTLAND (cornet) are prominently featured in this surprisingly loose and hot version of "IN A GREAT BIG WAY." Goodman and Teagarden spar magnificently on what nominally is a "Commercial" record. (Of course, they were notorious for this kind of sow's-ear-into-a-silk-purse sort of thing.).
"LET'S SIT AND TALK ABOUT YOU" is much more sober, a straight rendering. But you still can hear Goodman and Teagarden.
This original 1928 Velvet Tone 1823-V is in lovely EE- condition. Hardly any wear or scratches.
