Description

Up for auction is a magnificent, archive-quality specimen of early 1960s Southern California instrumental surf rock history. This is the original 1963 first pressing of Surfer’s Nightmare by The Persuaders featuring Chuck "Tequila" Rio. Released on the highly collectible Saturn Records (Cat #: LP-5000), this specific copy is an absolute dream for serious collectors. It remains preserved in its original factory shrink wrap and features the highly elusive, pristine original hype sticker reading: "Featuring Compatible Stereophonic High Fidelity." Historical Importance Chuck Rio (born Danny Flores) was the legendary mastermind, saxophonist, and iconic gravelly voice behind the multi-million-selling 1958 smash hit "Tequila" with The Champs. After parting ways with the group, he teamed up with Los Angeles teenage wildcats The Persuaders. Together they laid down an album that sounds like "The Champs on speed"—trading traditional breezy surf guitar melodies for raucous, sax-driven, frantic garage-surf tracks. Track Listing:

  • Side A: Let's Go Surfin', Taking Off On A Wall, Hanging Ten, Surfer Strip, Surfer's Lullabye, Gremmie Bread
  • Side B: Surfin' Blues, Toes On The Nose, Kahuna Stomp, Caught In The Soup, Surfer's Nightmare, The Raid
Condition Specifications
  • Cover/Sleeve Condition: EX (Excellent / Near Mint Style Presentation)
The jacket is strictly graded EX due only to the minor, unavoidable passage of time, but visually presents beautifully because it is still encased in its original factory shrink wrap. The shrink wrap is completely intact, keeping the iconic seascape artwork bright, clean, and entirely free from ring wear or edge scuffs. The original pink/black hype sticker is perfectly preserved beneath or on the shrink. The vintage price stickers remain firmly attached in the upper right quadrant.
  • Vinyl Disc Condition: NM (Near Mint)
Both sides of the heavy, vintage wax show an immaculate, high-gloss factory sheen. Pristine grooves showing virtually no physical defects, superficial scuffs, or hairline marks. The classic black Saturn labels with silver typeface are beautifully intact without spindle trails or writing. A definitive archive-worthy upgrade copy.
