Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are few, very fine and faint, this challenging acoustic album plays very well indeed.

Rarity: First issues with insert are scarce, especially mono copies that still offer clean sound. An acoustic album with quiet passages and instrument and vocal intensity. Fewer examples survive the time to still offer pleasing clean sound. This plays very impressively with little to fault, and includes the insert.

Brief Artist & Album Info: In terms of folk-rock history, The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter is a landmark recording and highly original, arguably the very best from the slightly out-there Incredible String Band. This beautiful and challenging album surprisingly sold quite well peaking at 5 in the UK (but only a miserly 161 in the United States). This is not a commercial album and it’s not for everyone, even dedicated folk fans – their complex song patterns and changing music structures, with a use of exotic and unusual instruments are not easily appreciated straightaway. Like all quality albums, some have to be worked on and perseverance pays off with repeated listens for this unique band, sound and record. A duo at this early time, Robin Williamson sang vocals on his own songs and played plays a host of instruments. Mike Heron, again sang vocals on his own songs. A beautiful recording, wonderfully produced by Joe Boyd, this first pressing, in mono will rarely be found that offering very clean sound. No loud volume for masking sound flaws or issues, this is flamboyant folk music with an edge and passion and this is a notoriously difficult record to find that plays well – this copy really does. Even clean little played examples can disappoint and often flawed by invisible pressing issues, I never take for granted any copy of this until sound-checked which can often prove a nervous time. I am delighted to say this plays with clean impressive sound with no major faults. The cover is a delight and naturally attractive – I always show the reverse side, which many consider to actually be the front, it perfectly encaptures the true essence of this record. The inclusion of the sometimes elusive folded insert which is guaranteed ORIGINAL, is a bonus as well, this album is often seen with it torn, grubby – or missing altogether. One of the folk classics that can be treasured forever and my first mono copy for some time.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+) and I just hope my pictures do this justice. A fully laminated single format and this one has the correct mono catalogue number. Manufactured in the UK by Polydor and includes the single folded lyric insert and plain inner sleeve.

Cover Laminate – Front & Back: One of the classic 1960s covers, and one that does it strong justice. The laminate retains excellent shine, fine freshness and clarity with any dulling around the rim area only light as seen under angled light. Just a little sliver of lifting on the spine edges that also shows little with normal full-on viewing. Only one noteworthy crease, this on the people wooded side near the bottom left corner, modestly seen, shows more again under angled light. Minimal other creasing with mainly fine edge ones that few will ever avoid at best. No fading and even the fine exposed strips on the laminate ends are clean and virtually unworn. The artwork to both sides is fantastic as seen.

Top Edge: Thin, but almost perfectly straight, smooth laminate with no chipping or wear.

Bottom Edge: Practically as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal wear or thickening, also guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with just a little compression in places. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this beautifully centred on a narrow depth. I have seen some examples of this cover where the spine is so flat, the text is only seen viewed from the back, I consider this one near exceptional and still very white and clear.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, mostly excellent shape retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: One of my favourite covers, it captures the mood of the music perfectly, and this one does it high justice. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a plain white unlined inner that has aged a little with some light creasing and crinkle. Both window circles neat and untorn, a small nick on the top opening edge near one corner, one edge a little thinned, but all mainly intact with no repairs. The paper itself, still quite clean with a little hint of discolouration near the adhesive on the seams

The Lyric Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: a superb example and clearly little handled and guaranteed orignal printed on salmon pink paper. This has become quite elusive and many examples has it missing. Often when it does surface it’s in two pieces or badly creased or torn, this is magnificent and does the rest of the set full justice. Clean, fresh, no grubbiness and devoid of creases, they are rarely seen better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: (or very close to). A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with modestly light plays on all the evidence with any surface marks generally light, fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Mostly hairlines or wispy blemishes, viewed in average room light, this record looks very impressive indeed and plays accordingly. One to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This timeless folk classic, plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The odd gentle tick or surface trace nigh-on impossible to avoid on such material, especially on a first issue mono copy. Acoustic music and vocals, a clean pressing and a generally carefully played copy is essential, few available ones will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Mono copies always the most vulnerable to wear and heavy stylus use, those who chose the mono format usually did so to play on the appropriate equipment and fewer will escape often major traumas or deep penetrating scratches. Total silence close to impossible, especially being played on the revealing high-end turntables and equipment, for which this mode was not really designed, but this was a pleasure to play-grade. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A genuine all-time-great that refuses to age, this band were distinctive and original, the songs are simply wonderful for those with an ear to listen. This one could prove difficult to find significantly better, especially in mono, and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
