A Matter of Life and Death is an outstanding album that has been growing on me ever since I first listened to it. This is definitely one of Iron Maiden's darkest albums, lyrically and conceptually, as most of the songs are about warfare. But for me this album never felt overbearing or too grim, despite the relative lengthiness of most of the songs. The thing that Maiden still hasn't forgotten is how to create some amazing melodies and really memorable choruses, which this album contains in spades. It really is amazing how this deep in their career, Maiden can still carve out a great niche for themselves in the progressive metal genre, and produce a record that is up there with some of the best of its kind. 'These Colours Don't Run', 'Brighter Than a Thousand Suns', and especially 'For the Greater Good of God' are classics, and there isn't really a weak track on the entire album. Definitely one of their best modern releases.
