Description
Influential and British metal pioneers Iron Maiden will be celebrating their FIFTIETH anniversary next year, as the band formed in 1975. Steve Harris, the bassist, main lyricist, and backing vocalist and keyboardist, is the only member to appear on every album from the self-titled debut in 1980 to the latest, (called 'Senjutsu'), released in 2021. Harris is definitely the founding father of Iron Maiden. I first saw the band on their 'Powerslave' tour, FORTY years ago, in 1984, (or '85. It was a long time ago!), with W.A.S.P. opening. And it was phenomenal!
Maiden has sold over ONE HUNDRED THIRTY MILLION records worldwide since they started releasing albums in '80! Two did particularly well: 'The Number of the Beast', in 1982, (which moved over TWENTY MILLION copies worldwide), and the follow-up album called 'Piece of Mind', (that sold over TWELVE MILLON copies all over the world), released in 1983. 'Piece of Mind' celebrated its FORTIETH anniversary last year!
'Piece of Mind' also charted the highest here in the US for Maiden. And that's because it's a great album! It gave us the hits "The Trooper", "Flight of Icarus", "Where Eagles Dare", and "Die With Your Boots On". A solid album, no BS, and no filler! The cover artwork is Eddie wearing a straightjacket, chained up, in a padded cell. The back cover is the band having dinner, except the main course is...brain! And speaking of brain, drummer Nicko McBrain is now onboard as the new drummer with this release, replacing Clive Burr, and he's been there ever since. A great effort from a stellar metal band!
A 12" picture disc for the album got released in '83, when the album came out. It was printed up in mass quantities, so you can usually find one for a reasonable cost. They used a different pic of Eddie than what's on the original cover. On that one, Eddie is crushing the planet into pieces...and the B side is a closeup of that brain. But the coolest part is that they add the Iron Maiden remake of an awesome vintage (and rockin') song by Jethro Tull called "Cross-Eyed Mary"!
Many years later, in 2001, another picture disc LP was made, in the UK, and in extremely limited copies. And this time, they used the original album's artwork. (On both front AND back!) It's Eddie, looking wicked, and breaking those chains. And the B side is the band at dinner, with brain on the menu! The vinyl itself looks great, with only a couple of very, very light surface marks on it. Nothing bad, and hardly noticable. No scratches, gouges, or scuffs. I see a small bubble, on one song, that was made in the manufacturing process, and may or may not be audible. (I can't vouch for the sound quality as I never play specialty vinyl such as pic discs or colored records.) But the colors are still bright, and overall this is shiny and clean, and looking fantastic! No Jethro Tull remake on this version, sad to say.
An 80s metal classic, on an import special edition limited picture disc...don't wait too long, as it's surely going home with SOMEONE, and soon! Maiden fans are the best, and I should know. I'm one of them. And we love our Iron Maiden merch!
Iron Maiden is currently touring until the end of the year. Currently in the band: Steve Harris, Bruce Dickinson, Nicko McBrain, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers, who replaced Adrian Smith when he briefly left (he's back now). THREE lead guitarists! Truly, truly legendary...

Fly, touch the sun
On your way, like an eagle
Fly
Fly as high as the sun"
