Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band from Leyton in the East End of London. The band were formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, formerly a member of Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler. Iron Maiden are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide. The band won the Ivor Novello Awards for international achievement in 2002. They were also inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk during their tour in the United States in 2005.

The band have headlined several major events in their career, notably Rock in Rio, Ozzfest alongside Black Sabbath, Donington's "Monsters of Rock" and "Download" Festivals and the "Reading and Leeds Festivals."

Iron Maiden are influenced by Thin Lizzy, UFO and Deep Purple amongst others. Iron Maiden's mascot, Eddie, is a perennial fixture in the band's sci-fi and horror-influenced album cover art, as well as in live shows. Eddie was drawn by Derek Riggs until 1992, although there have been various incarnations by numerous artists including Melvyn Grant. Eddie is also featured in a first-person shooter video game from the band, Ed Hunter, as well as numerous books, graphic comics and band-related merchandise.

1982's THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST remains one of heavy metal'sall-time classics. Although the British quintet was in the midst of enjoying its first taste of global success, original singer Paul Di'Anno abruptly quit in 1981. Though stunned,the young band wisely agreed to soldier on, making ex-Samson singer Bruce Dickinson their new frontman. Nicknamed "The Air Raid Siren", Dickinson's voice was to become one of the band's most prominent signature characteristics. It also didn't hurt that the band had composed some of its best songs ever, such as the haunting title song, and its first U.K. Top-10 single, "Run to the Hills". Other highlights include thesinister "Children of the Damned", the melodic "The Prisoner", and the album-closing epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name".

In all of my time on this earth, and all the albums I've listened to, this album is the greatest of all. The guitar solo's are amazing. The songs, even moreso. I only have the original album, which has 8 tracks on it, and in my opinion, it was much better with only 8 tracks because that was classic maiden. The first song, Invaders, gives you a kick to know just what you're listening to, and is not the best, but still amazing. Children of the Damned is one of the slowest songs by maiden at the start, but finishes with a bang. The Prisoner, which has a cool introduction, was just another great song. 22, Acacia Avenue was repetitive, but still amazing. The title track, Number of the Beast, I don't have words to describe it. Run to the Hills, instant classic. Gangland, not my most favorite track by maiden, but still good. And last but not least, Hallowed be thy Name, which IS with no doubt the best song Iron Maiden ever made. So go out and get it.
