When it comes to blaxploitation movie soundtracks, the revolutionary acid-jazz of vibraphonist Roy Ayers often gets lost in the shuffle with "Shaft" (Isaac Hayes), "Superfly" (Curtis Mayfield) and "Black Caesar" (James Brown)....but his 14 tracks on this record are as good as it gets! SO WE PUT SHAFT & SUPERFLY WITH COFFY SO A COLLECTORS CAN UNDERSTAND AND LISTEN TO THESE 3 SOUNDTRACKS.

The smooth grooves are paced by percussionist William King and drummer Dennis Davis, with the brass handled by a superfecta that includes Jon Faddis and Cecil V. Bridgewater. Four cuts have vocals - "Coffy Is The Color" (Denise Bridgewater, Wayne Garfield, Ayers), "King George" (Ayers), "Coffy Baby" (Bridgewater), "Shining Symbol" (Garfield) — with the former being the standout cut. There is a sweet flow from "Coffy Is The Color," "Priscilla's Theme" and "King George," with a winning exacta in the final tunes, "Vittroni's Theme - King Is Dead" and "End Of Sugarman." Released in 1973, the music to this film retains its vibrancy through riffs that a listener can't resist.

  A post-Impressions Curtis Mayfield recorded one dynamic solo project after another in the 1970s, but if a listener could own only one of them, Superfly would be the ideal choice. The sleek yet earthy soundtrack to one of the '70s' most celebrated blaxploitation films, Superfly is full of riveting, sometimes chilling sociopolitical commentary reflecting on the drugs, violence and crime plaguing the inner city. From the infectious title song to Freddie's Dead (a reflection on a junkie's tragic life as troubling as it is poignant) to the hard-hitting Pusherman (brilliantly interpreted by rapper Ice-T in 1988), Superfly is clearly Mayfield's finest hour.

SHAFT 180 GRAM 45 SPEED EP/ LP. 

Here's How it was done:

Using only the original analog master tapes, the renowned team of Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray remastered and cut all of the titles at AcousTech Mastering, which features a pure Class-A disc-cutting system. AcousTech is located at Record Technology, Inc. the plant where the vinyl was pressed. It is a tremendous sonic advantage to have the pressing plant plating department & mastering room in the same facility as Steve & Kevin could cut a lacquer and plated immediately. This prevents the degradation of the grooves in a lacquer which is very fragile to quick deterioration.

And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music.

This is the ultimate reissues. The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session

"Theme From Shaft" (Side 1)
The undisputed anthem for what would be called Blaxploitation, "Theme From Shaft" is as popular and well-known as the movie it supported. The song opens with the ever-recognizable wah-wah, funked-up guitar chords, and we're quickly treated to Isaac Hayes' soul-drenched lyrics convincing ANYONE that this guy Shaft is one "b-a-d m*****…shut your mouth." The song oozes with the cool confidence that made the character Shaft one of the relative first Black film heroes.

"Theme From Shaft" earned Hayes his only Number One pop single in late 1971, winning an Oscar for Best Song, and helping him become the first Black composer to win an Oscar for Best Score.

"Soulsville" (Side 1)
Another one of Isaac Hayes' biggest hits, "Soulsville" provides the contrast of a down-tempo ballad outlining the plight of life in the ghetto. It's an emotional tale of poverty, drugs, desperation and faith.

"Do Your Thing" (Side 2)
Pure funk. This nearly 20-minute jam demonstrates just how potent the Stax houseband, The Bar-Kays, could be. They establish a groove in which you can comfortably loose yourself. After "Theme From Shaft," this was the most popular hit from the Shaft movie soundtrack. It climbed to Number Three on the Billboard chart, a remarkable feat for such a long, mostly-instrumental song.

Analogue Productions introduced test pressings from their Stax Records reissue at the June 2003 Home Entertainment Expo in San Francisco. Among the exhibitors to show off their wares using these yet-to-be-released 45s was Richard Vandersteen of Vandersteen Audio.

I mean, famous, classic music sounding incredible. It's just great old music that sounds much better than it ever had before. Besides being one of the most successful soundtrack albums of all time, spending over a year on Billboard's pop album chart, which it also topped, it opened the door for a number of other R&B artists, including Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Norman Whitfield, to write for motion pictures. Besides such memorable tunes as "Ellie's Love Theme," "Soulville," the Wes Montgomery-inspired "Cafe Reggio's" and the nearly 20-minute funk opus "Do Your Thing," the double-disc album includes the classic "Theme from Shaft," itself a No. 1 pop hit.
